Strictly speaking, Common Law is based on precedent, not anecdote. It emerges from presented circumstances; but those circumstances do not form the law. Opinions formed about the circumstances do.

Precedent just means following decisions are bound to prior decisions. Which, binding precedent is based on determining the most comparable anecdote.

I suspect you are a lawyer of the discount variety yourself.
