Depends on the state. In AZ, shops do a background check on site. But private sellers are totally unregulated. So you can get a gun without even giving your name. This is why gun shows are so popular. It's basically a bazaar of private sales

Why would they do that? And what do you think will happen when they've bought them all up?

There is a country with more guns (per capita) than the US with almost zero gun crime. What Switzerland has that the US does not have is training, more in depth background check, and zero tolerance for criminals owning guns.

Gun lovers in the US are scared that better background checks and stricter rules will cause less people to be able to get guns - only the screwups.
