How about two back-to-back days, give half off one day and the other half of the second?
I'm thinking rotate through the people over the course of a week
Half the hospital staff off two days in a row seems like a really bad idea.
Cries in frontline healthcare.
Not sure if other countries have a similar "holiday", we have a "solidarity day" where everyone works but aren't paid for the day and functions as a fundraiser for the retirement. A similar holiday but where the money goes to essential workers would be nice.
I haven't had a Veteran's Day off since I was in high school. Am a Veteran.
They should be getting "essential worker" pay. Otherwise the term is just another for a low-paid min wage employee
Nope but think of all merch Walmart and target would sell. They would change their logos for the day and sell shirts, hats, banners etc and say they will donate. They would pander to the demographic for publicity…
That's the point of labor day and we know that essential workers definitely don't get that day off.
National panic day
Labour Day ?
Almost like national nurses week. 🙃
Make a dozen then a dozen days of double pay!!!!
Isn't that just the 1st of May (Worker's day)?
Yeah we call it "Labor Day" in America, in September
But essential workers don't necessarily get it off
I do.
Nice!
Laboring on labor day... Something they don't teach you about in school
I got a 5 dollar StarBucks gift card for Worker's Appreciation Day this year. Not even enough to buy a medium latte...
I love time and a half and Sunday pay. I'm gonna miss it when I move.
They already did, it's Labor Day.
We have a National Work Day in my country and it's a public holiday. Most people get a day off while essential workers get double pay.
So True the first Monday of august in Iceland is a bank holiday it's called verslunarmannadagurinn or shopkeepers day and most if all shops and restaurants are open while offices, banks and government jobs and "regular" work is closed.
If I'm not mistaken, here in Italy workers do get a day off on their national day. Idk, I never paid attention to whether they get a day off or not
No one forces you to work certain jobs. I work in a hospital and I have to work in all kinds of crazy circumstances its what I signed up for. And when I was younger I worked crappy jobs with bad hours for little pay.
And even if it did, it would just mean that one poor bugger would be left to do everyone else's work.
If Essential Workers were truly respected in the US then the value for that service should be at the highest level. Hourly rates for putting your life on the line is not demonstrating that respect or commitment to those professionals is a real thing.
No wonder there is a great resignation and shortage of experience going on since putting one's money where their mouth is, appears to be just more rhetoric after all.
A lot of service workers work on labor day. But a lot also get the day off. This was always the empty argument used against making election day a national holiday. Not everybody gets the day off. Maybe not all, but a lot would.
Mail in ballots and a holiday. Everyone is happy except people trying to suppress voting.
Citation for that? Employers that would give the day off already give time off for voting.
I think you're forgetting what the word essential means
"Happy Labor Day!"
laughs in gas station attendant
Everywhere except Waffle House
In my part of the world if you have to work on a public holiday (we have 12 per year) you get paid time and a half and you get a bonus day off you can take another day.
I get Labour Day off but I'll gladly take another one if you're handing them out.
Yes that is what "essential" means
I don't understand. Can someone explain?
It will be come a holiday, then
"In celebration of essential workers day, bring proof of your job status for a free/discounted x"
Now no one gets off that day, because of the traffic from the special, and it will probably be twice as busy those days.
It's called Labor Day
A lot of essential workers have to work on Labor Day, and in some cases they have to work harder.
Oh, I wasn't disagreeing. I was pointing out the truth of your statement. There is a holiday dedicated to workers, and most essential workers don't get it off.
Merci la fête du travail (quand ça tombe pas un dimanche)
Ya know what! I'm not going to work tomorrow!
Labor day?
I live off fast food and the only time it bites me in the ass is Christmas day. The other 364.25 days per year regardless of it being a holiday or not I can find something open no problem
I guess living off fast food bites me in the ass health wise but let's overlook that
We might be able to give some of them a day off. Medical, no, but grocery stores could be closed for one day a year and it would be okay.
No, but they could get time and a half
Or we could just pay them a living wage... One day per year of time and half isn't going to pay rent for 12 months.
I wait tables at 2.83/hr. Any overtime or any company that has paid me time and a half I've only ever gotten the bump to $4 whatever it comes out to be :')
Which retailer pays time and a half for anything other Christmas and Thanksgiving?
All that I have worked at and all the offices too have at least 5 holidays per year
All of them in Ontario.
That's not the law in the US?
Must depend on the state. Mine only pays for Christmas and Thanksgiving but were closed those days.
In the UK you won't
Time and a half?! How lazy and cheap is that, where I live sundays and holidays are double pay.
Nope. In my state it's optional for retail to pay holiday pay. So they'd be at work watching other people enjoy "essential worker's day" while making the lives of essential worker's worse.
That's basically what Labor Day already is.
Yippy, $10.86/hour!
Better than a sharp stick in the eye
How much does that pay?
Probably not enough
Depends on your insurance policy.
But I'm American
In my state, you have to pay a fee when you get the stick. Stick fee.
they will have to work extra hard that day. everyone will be out doing activites.... and getting hurt. er's start filling up about 3pm on days like that
That's why you make it 2 days so they can take turns
"I'm taking the day off in your honor! I need a couple scratchers and $40 on pump 14."
Isn't that called labor day? Oh wait- im in aus
They should get rid of a holiday to honor essential workers
We're too busy creating fake holidays like Juneteenth.
Veteran's Day, anyone?
Yeah always bugged me that unless they're federal/bank employees veterans don't get it off.
They had enough time off in their "service" and are now the biggest welfare queens in America. I think they're doing just fine.
This is one of the saddest attempts at trolling I've seen but I believe in you; you can do worse than this!
Since when is speaking true facts trolling?
Create two or three days, then stagger which ones each essential worker has off.
I d rather see " force the jobless to work day" ... and I'll just work my regular non bullshit holiday schedule
