Smoking is way too accepted

Not only is it self harm but a lot o people have gotten lung cancer and other illnesses from second hand smoking and even died as a result

It's no longer socially accepted. My parents smoked four packs a day... each. It was pure abuse being around them, but they were normal for their generation. Cancer killed them.

Except it's not that's why it's banned in many places, drinking however is more acceptable.

Self harm. It's banned from places because secondhand smoke harms others. It's not banned cause you're harming yourself.

"Relatively" socially acceptable. Every place I've ever worked at has an area where us smokers get together and smoke. Smokers are even allowed extra breaks, in a way, because we can always go, "I'm gonna go outside for a quick puff" and most of the time it's cool.

My current job even has a smokers' section. I've been campaigning for a cutters section, but haven't made much headway.

Smoking is absolutely socially acceptable. Especially in this age with disposable vapes, because "cigarettes kill." (they do, but people act like salt nicotine vapes are better for you and cigarettes are the all mighty evil while sucking down 4 vapes a week)

it's not self harm as you do it for the nicotine not to harm yiur self

@synthsexual It's self harm when you intend to harm yourself.

it's self harm when you deny what you are doing is harmful as well. smoking is legitimate self-harm. knowing what it does to your lungs, heart, cardiovascular system, in truth - every part of you - and smoking? you have to suspend reality for yourself to think you aren't hurting yourself each time you take a drag.

Not all harm you do to yourself is self harm. You have to have the intention to hurt yourself behind it.

You aren't taking drags specifically to hurt yourself. You're doing it for a host of other reasons.

@Crazymotherfuker it is self-harm. denial means you can tell yourself otherwise.

You could categorize almost anything in life as self harm if you follow this definition though.

Self harm is an act that's exclusive purpose is to harm. People smoke cigarettes for enjoyment, the harmful effects are an accepted outcome, no different than eating a donut.

If you're aware that smoking cigarettes causes cancer and destroys your lungs and still do it it's most definitely self harm.

That's like saying cutting isn't self harm because it releases endorphins.

The difference is that with self harm, it is done for the harm itself, not a byproduct of trying to achieve some other goal.

@Huemaninstrument if you cut yourself for pleasure it's masochism

So why is it that most people who cut get addictive symptoms? The body reacts a similar way to a lot of other pleasurable things, like eating a tasty snack or succeeding at a task - your brain releases happy chemicals and you get a feel-good response from it. This is the basis for why most cutters keep up the habit after starting.

@Huemaninstrument if you cut yourself for pleasure it's masochism

So if I'm not self harming and I'm just a masochist why did you report my account for "self harm".

Likewise, tissue damage from drug abuse or eating disorders is not considered self-harm because it is ordinarily an unintended side-effect but context may be needed as intent for such acts varies.[9]

"context may be needed" is the clue that if someone is smoking with the explicit intent of harming themselves (which isn't THAT uncommon) then it's absolutely an act of self harm. Same goes for people who drink with the intention of slowly dying as they destroy their liver - again, not that uncommon among alcoholics.
