True. I've traveled extensively across different continents and the worst offenders are almost always Chinese tourists. Many people don't say it because it's considered racist, and instead choose to point out at American or British tourists instead

When I lived in Las Vegas for 24 years, the only tourists who stood out as problematic were Chinese. And it was particularly evident because for the first 15 years I never encountered them at all.

Came here to say this; sorry, I know it's bad to generalize, but damn, they're just the worst.

I have been a tourist for years. As an American, I certainly don't want to be loud or obnoxious. Many Americans don't speak a second language, unlike European tourists.
We are actually overly gregarious compared to other groups, I feel. We often strike up conversations, and that doesn't always fit well within the life of a normal commuter who happens to live in Paris or London.

"Gregarious": I'm afraid that's what I would be as well. We Americans are used to chitchat. I'm afraid that in my earnest to learn, and out of habit, that I would be overly talkative. Being from the south exacerbates casual talk as well…

You haven't met my sister and brother-in-law in law. They are the quintessential "Ugly Americans".

American here. Every time I go to a tourist city like London or Paris, the tourists annoy me. I can't imagine what it's like for a local.

Tbf most have been okay.
Had some excited over my puppy a few years ago they were lovely.
Canadians are better but Americans aren't as bad as they are made out to be

Makes sense. There are a quarter billion of us, probably some variance in our behavior, manners, and emotional intelligence.

opensofiass avatar opensofias Yeah You Are +5Reply

Agreed. My only complaint is that they tend to talk too loud.

American tourists are actually very charming, polite and respectful.

maybe but they are loud and have a "we are superior to you" aura about them. we laugh at americans in our country on how arrogant and loud they are.

French are the worst. Just visited a French/Dutch Caribbean island. They're polite until I tell them I don't speak French. They're condescending to the locals and africans in general. Often referring to them as 'sale haïtien' or 'dirty haitian'. The locals also told me that french tourists are the ones who get caught shoplifting and disobeying laws and ordinances. I don't know why they're rude to Americans. They'd be speaking German if it wasn't for us lol.

@dankXD French are the worst. Just visited a French/Dutch Caribbean island. They're polite until I tell them I don't speak...

Not that i don't think French can be dickish a lot. But the more you repeat that silly cliché line about wwII, the more you also come over as one.

'You' didn't do anything. The American army at the time helped alongside the soviets and the brits. America wasn't the one hero that saved the entire continent.

I'll agree. 75% of the French I have met as tourists here, tourists abroad or in France are aholes.

Next up, Spaniards.

American tourists are not bad per se, though loads will annoy Europeans though, with them being loud in restaurants and secluded spaces, dressing inappropriately and coming across as shallow and insincere.

@contextrip American tourists are not bad per se, though loads will annoy Europeans though, with them being loud in restaurants...

Thankfully, I live in an US city of about 2M, and you can go to any restaurant dressed almost any way you want. Most of us are over caring how people dress.

As a Finn who has talked to a couple of American tourists. I feel like they are suspiciously too nice. I don't like it xD

@Prettydotty As a Finn who has talked to a couple of American tourists. I feel like they are suspiciously too nice. I don't like...

We just like to talk. There isn't anything suspicious. Our culture is very friendly and welcoming. 😕

It's always a case by case scenario.

I hate American tourists and I'm an American in an American city. They drive up property prices and caused our taxes to skyrocket. They drive down the wrong way on one way streets, they drive so slow looking for parking that doesn't exist. Just go away. Go back to where you came from. Or at least learn how to read road signs and your stupid GPS

When I visited Ireland, people were surprised to find out I was from the US because I was quiet and not being obnoxious or slutty (as they put it). They kept assuming I was Canadian 😅

Yeah! Thank you for saying that, Brit there. I always try to be nice and find you and your fellow Brits very lovely (and tolerant when i start up random conversations with them because I speak the language) ; )

Nickyikkys avatar Nickyikky Yeah You Are +3Reply

I've loved every American I've ever met. I hate hearing about america the country's policies and overall opinions but as individuals they are humans like everyone else.

It's because they're pretending to be Canadian

We just got want to have a good time without issue since we only get one week of PTO for the year. Gotta make the most of it.

Europeans will tend to think this because Americans visiting Europe tend to come form higher socioeconomic classes.

The Americans visiting Mexico and doing Caribbean cruises are every bit the drunk trashy wrecks Brits are in Spain.

In Cuba, it's the Canadians that start fights and vomit in the pool. Bartenders say "wow, American tourists are always so nice, so friendly, so generous". Sure because the few Americans they meet arent visiting on a $599 7 day all inclusive package.

Mallorca they will say British are drunken fools and American tourists are nice. Cancun they will say Americans are drunken fools and British tourists are nice.

I work for a big US accounting firm and even the customers are really nice, not sure why all the bad rep

Because people focus on negative for way too much.

vcsandfecess avatar vcsandfeces Yeah You Are +2Reply

Nope.

Overweight, uneducated and over self entitled.

@Dr-pen Speak for yourself lol

I'm not American, but I've seen the "standard American tourist" while holidaying.

The stereotype is true, regardless of wether or not it upsets you.

Not every American is like this, just the ones that can afford to travel apparently.

@LookAnAltAccount Nope. Overweight, uneducated and over self entitled.

The overweight stereotype is such a stupid played out joke. There is more obesity in the EU than in the US. And uneducated? Yeah idk about that. I can almost certainly bet I went to a much better and nicer school than yours. And self entitled, ummm yeah no. Maybe at home. But not abroad to the level that you're lying to make it out to be.

@Pheniz21 The overweight stereotype is such a stupid played out joke. There is more obesity in the EU than in the US. And...

I have it at EU 17% obese and USA 42% obese.

In some countries such as the UK the gap might be closing and the EU is definitely getting fatter but American obesity can be frankly shocking and it does make some Americans very visible abroad. The big guy who complains about walking and says that the Spanish are dumb for not knocking down historic sites so it's easier to drive a few hundred metres tends to stick in your mind even if he's not representative of all American tourists.

You do inadvertently display one of the reasons that some Americans can get on ppl's nerves. The irrational assumption that things are just better in America by default. What exactly do you base your assumption that you went to a better school on? What information are you using to draw that conclusion?

Why do you assume someone is lying? They are most likely speaking from personal experience, why would they lie?

Those are the only US Americans who can afford the time to vacation across seas.

They are terrible when they come back home 😅

Hahahah 😂😂

Larny2019s avatar Larny2019 Yeah You Are +2Reply

Is an American is holding you at gunpoint to write this? It'll be ok OP just whatever you do don't call the police

That's because the only Americans that can afford to travel are most likely educated, well spoken and intelligent.

If you want to experience the average American, go temp labor for a day or week down in the Phoenix valley, and see what the majority is like ...(word up yo, you doggin me homie?)

American here. Thanks. I was expecting to see some obnoxious American tourists on my recent trip to Dublin, Belfast and Edinburgh. I was quite surprised, that the loud, obnoxious and rude tourists that I saw were always French.

My general impression of Americans is that they seem quite nice.

@No_on3__ My general impression of Americans is that they seem quite nice.

It's a mixed bag from my experience. There are a lot of decent enough American tourists but I've also seen a lot of the types who go for underaged girls in south east Asia unfortunately.

I actually agree! I think the enthusiasm they show is very endearing but god, please be a little quieter. I don't know why there's such a need to yell!

@Milkzey I actually agree! I think the enthusiasm they show is very endearing but god, please be a little quieter. I don't...

I apologize for my loud voice and excitable nature. And my chattiness. It's just that I get very excited and energetic. 😅 I'm quiet in public tho, It's just with friends or people I like.

browndog888s avatar browndog888 Yeah You Are +1Reply

Agree. And friendly.

I would link you the video where an American tourist is being racist towards an Indian resident in Poland but that would just be cherry picking. Every single country's visitors have a problem in general with a few tourists. Not saying that it invalidates your overall good experience with American tourists specifically, but trashy people exist from every tourist culture, including Americans.

The worse experience I've had is a Chinese person asking for directions and then shouting through a loudspeaker down the street at a huge group of Chinese tourists. Well it wasn't a bad experience it was just funny

What Americans are you getting!?

Dr-pens avatar Dr-pen Yeah You Are +1Reply

The reason why I belive Americans get a bad rap is because they're the largest group of Tourists. And within that group there are likely going to be a large amount of assholes, and just the quantity alone is enough for people to project it to all. It is also likely that it's just the Asshole American Tourists are usually lounder and more essentric about it.

But personally, the worst tourists I've had are either Canadian or from Florida.

@mattyh2433 The reason why I belive Americans get a bad rap is because they're the largest group of Tourists. And within that...

American here. Floridians visit my state. I personally want to set their state adrift and completely disown them. We all acknowledge their idiocy. There is a running gag about Florida and their absurd behavior. 😂 I'm joking but not really, they litter and trash the place. Ever single one I've met. Which granted is only like 5. 2 being my Aunt and Uncle who are also anti-vaccination 💀

the only american tourists i came across just yelled SPEAK ENGLISH at me they came to the country i live and expect me to start speaking english when talking with my friends so i just yelled back WE ZIJN IN NEDERLAND SPREEK NEDERLANDS (were in the netherlands speak dutch). but most likely i have encountered way more and just didnt notice because they were acting like normal people

I have to disagree... they're certainly not bad like British tourists can be but damn some of them are so unaware and obnoxious.. I live in a city where there are absolutely loads of American students and tourists.

Of course not all of them are like this but generally they are, from my experience.

Blame the Karens.
