Umbrellas are a sin upon this earth, amirite?

Someone got hit by an umbrella

Someone *nearly* got hit by an umbrella

At least half your points can be solved by holding it higher or lower based on the situation
by Anonymous1 year ago
- Get a better quality umbrella
- Learn to angle and control your umbrella better
That should solve all of the issues you listed.

I don't disagree, these are valid points. But can we somewhere encourage the umbrella wielding heathens of the world to heed this advice? En masse?
Shall I make a leaflet to distribute?

Very true. OP, this is an unpopular opinion that hopefully get popular. I like it

But you can use them to stay dry and scratch your head at the same time
by Anonymous1 year ago
Hadn't considered this angle of argument. I take everything I said back.

As you should. You can bad mouth umbrellas when you've got something better. Right now it's get wet or get umbrella.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I mean, I've got a full set of waterproofs and wellington boots...
by Anonymous1 year ago
Yeah no I prefer carrying a little roof with me.

I agree, they are pointless, unless you are dressed up and just need to get from the car to the door.
I never dress up so I wear a good rain jacket and some rain resistant pants. Spray my shoes with scotch guard and unless it is pouring I stay fairly dry. On a long hike I'm not holding a stupid umbrella over my head.

They are not pointless. They have many points… AT EYE LEVEL!
Just kidding, I live in Vancouver where it rains quite a bit and I've only used an umbrella about 4 times in 30 years. They are pointless.
by Anonymous1 year ago
The metal points are awful. We definitely should have come up with a better solution by now. That being said, I always feel a little romantic and wistful when I use my umbrella. Maybe I'm old fashioned?
by Anonymous1 year ago
I wish I had one this morning :(

have you ever used an umbrella to walk to your car? then you get to your car and you open the door, and then you have to kind of angle yourself into your car in a weird way? and then once you are in the car you are just sitting there with the door open and your arm sticking out the door with an open umbrella? and you think to yourself: how did i end up in this precarious situation? how do i close this umbrella and stow it in my car without getting water everywhere? spoiler: you can't.

not really

Check out Davek solo umbrellas, all signs point to super good quality and they have a lifetime warranty i believe...
by Anonymous1 year ago
I take your point, but my legs will still get wet and I would surely still endanger other pedestrians (if was my want). I'll stick with my waterproofs :)

Poncho gang rise up!!!
by Anonymous1 year ago
What are you on about, they are immensely useful for rainy days and if you are a birtish magical nanny you can float in the air when you use one.
by Anonymous1 year ago
So, what's your redemptive plan that when it starts raining people won't sin?
by Anonymous1 year ago
It just occurred to me that I have literally never owned an umbrella 🤔
by Anonymous1 year ago
I think umbrellas were invented at south east Asia to protect people from the sun.
by Anonymous1 year ago
In the Pacific Northwest, this is an entirely popular opinion. You never see umbrellas in Seattle, etc.
by Anonymous1 year ago
What do ppl use?
by Anonymous1 year ago
Raincoats with hoods and/or hats
by Anonymous1 year ago
Ah. Thank you
by Anonymous1 year ago
Came here to pretty much say this. Seattle native, or at least practically so, and I do not recall the last time I used a bumpershoot.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I mean all I use it for is stabbing people 🤷
by Anonymous1 year ago
OP has never had to deal with desert sun
by Anonymous1 year ago
Higjly perceptive, very correct

Took a trip to NYC, I remember the bad rain and the street riddled with broken umbrellas. People just abandoned them everywhere.
