Is that true? I grew up on the Great Lakes, and they gave us mandatory swim lessons on the very well-founded assumption that we'd be playing in or near water at a young age. If you turned six without knowing how to swim, the other kids wondered what was wrong with you.
I guess if you live in the desert or something it's less critical, but I always assume that everyone I meet knows how to swim.
I'm from the UK and I've never met anyone here that can't swim, or at least it hasn't come up. After a quick Google, 88% of brits can swim compared with 56% of Americans.
As someone that's been in the water a lot through my life, I find this shocking
