Is something different now? When I was in school the teachers were always talking unless you were taking a test. And you wouldn't be able to listen during a test for obvious reasons. Like even when doing normal classwork we generally did it alongside the teacher and the rest of the class.

Sounds like you have a sensory sensitivity. I wonder if they world compromise with earplugs since you can't use them to listen to music.
