When it comes to being afraid for my wellbeing, I feel safer in NYC then the country. amirite?

Yes, you watch too many horror movies

Is it partially because you grew up in the city?
I grew up very rural and feel way safer there. I've rarely seen others caring about another person in the city and because we lived so far from hospitals our school and church really went all out on first aid training as well as I had neighbors phone numbers who were nurses or EMTs.

Just saying… I live in the "country" and country boys will have your back 100% of the time when someone steps out of line.

Country lifestyle is definitely more "you're on your own" and you have to live accordingly. First aid supplies and basic medical knowledge is a must. Also a good idea to keep extra food, water, etc. Plan for multi hour, sometimes multi day power outages. Weapons aren't just to deter meth heads (often the most common criminals in rural areas), they're for animal predators too.
What makes it worth it is peace & quiet, space, freedom and flexibility to do what you want when you want to, and the fresh air & nature right outside your door. It's definitely not for everyone but I think you can feel and be safe wherever you are, so long as you plan accordingly.

Uses "duodenum" to sound clever. Also can't spell "than" in the title correctly.

Statistically speaking cities are safer than rural areas.
by Anonymous1 year ago
That's mostly due to distance from hospitals apparently. You're more likely to be a victim of a violent crime in a big city. So it depends on what OP means by safe.

Can I see the stats? I agree, I just wanna see

Uhh you can just buy a gun and defend yourself.

NYC is fine. Most of the countryside is fine too. Way too much fearmongering by the media.

I'll buy that. Despite crime rates, I've always felt more comfortable in an urban environment. Rural areas make me feel uneasy and I'm not sure why. I also feel that if you have experience living in a city, you're pretty aware and able to avoid most dangerous situations.

but but but some guy who's never been to NYC said it's a communist hellhole where people get murdered and die in a pool of hobo pee :((((

I totally agree.

Cities are way safer than rural areas you aren't familiar with. In a city you are always a short trip from a police station or a hospital, and there are lots of people to ask for help.
NYC in particular is extremely safe by USA standards.

As a queer person I have to agree.
I think my risk of getting hate crimed would be higher if I had stayed where I used to live out in the country.

Considering the amount of gunfire I hear regularly while living in the rural south this isn't that weird of a take.

As a black man - I agree. Not only is there isolation, but also the prospect of running into a belligerent racist who doesn't know what empathy is
