+169 Running jokes on sitcoms always get really old really fast. amirite?

Honestly, running jokes is something I really love about shows, when they are executed properly. Its nostalgia and reminds you of the earlier seasons Brooklyn 99 had a great throwback episode to the Jimmy Jab Games in the last season but the heists got boring fast, after the fourth one it was just 'theyre doing mean stuff to eachother and you cant guess who won until the last minute'. If you make a returning joke, make it well, and dont make the joke just because you want a returning joke.

Disagree only because of seasons 1-3 of Arrested Development.

Arrested Development is a different story I think. I can't tell you why but I agree the self reference and running jokes work in that show but don't in a lot of others.

These jokes take a different beat when you indulge them once a week, or the call back is to years ago. That little burst of nostalgia is more palatable when it's not a reference to 3 hours back. Ross in Friends seems to have been a loveable dope, but binging the show revealed him as an inconsiderate, selfish crustacean.

You expect too much from a genre that is already the lowest common denominator. There is no sitcom that is I can think of that isn't trash, albeit enjoyable. I can rank them by their entertainment value, but will still be a trash genre for days when you just want something light hearted and easy to consume. Brooklyn 99 is especially formulaic with the most boring inoffensive superficial characters.

I think it just depends on the joke and how it impacts the storyline. I quote Peralta's "cool cool cool" line all the time. It was a quick throw in that made me laugh and the show continued. The heist episodes though got annoying because it was just 30 constant minutes of a joke we'd already seen too much. If that makes sense?
