Yuppies were the boomer cohort, and the word meant "young urban professional" (pluralized), with the connotation that they used to be hippies in the sixties but now have changed/sold out. People who were hippies in the sixties can't be described as "young" anymore, and "ouppies" doesn't roll off the tongue. They're just called Boomers nowadays.
