I admit I didn't really get the hype behind it. It was a fun number, but didn't blow my mind. I did enjoy the movie as a whole though.

Never heard of it. The Oscars are a joke though and are just a circlejerk, so it has no real credibility considering they're all bought by the studios before the event even happens.
It's definitely not the best Bollywood song I've ever heard (grew up on those movies), nor is it the best choreography I've ever seen. I've have given it to Nagada Sang Dhol if that were an option.
That said, I definitely don't think it should have gone to a song from Black Panther.

All honesty when steely Dan beat Eminem for record of the year in 2001 "music awards" died for me. I had to ask my parents who they were and why they were even known

steely dan is one of those groups that never got much love & award shows like to "make up" for not winning in older artists glory-days, by giving them an award later down the line.
Judas Preist won the Metal album of the year at the Grammy for a rereleased live album, around 2008, over 20 more deserving albums, for example.
In 20 years, Megadeth or Gojira is gonna win an award over some one much more deserving to make up for getting snubbed on that one and so on and so forth. Music Awards and Hall of fames are the absolute worst barometer for what is actually worthy of our admiration.
precisely. up until about 3/4 years ago, Nas didn't win one grammy. He's almost 50 & was 17 when his insanely classic debut album, "illmatic", was released.
It's not an unpopular opinion - at least in my peer group lol. It won only because there was intelligent and aggresive lobbying which confirmed the award and some even speculate there was some money, ransom or bribery involved as well but that is mere speculation.
