+87 There is too much obsession with labels nowadays, amirite?

by Arlie17 9 months ago

Ironically, we're living in a world where we've tried to label people less but ended up labelling them more.

by Dmertz 9 months ago

Thanks

Your username labels your icon's hair color! *clutches pearls*

by Victorialesch 9 months ago

Preach my friend! Let's just naturally get to know each other and see how the conversation goes. The moment people start telling me about all of the different things they box themselves into I just kind of shut down.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

God, it's like if someone was an elderly, white woman, who loves dogs and hates people who are different to her. Like, that is too many things, in my day people were just normal

by Anonymous 9 months ago

My wife is a straight cis short Asian woman of colour. I have cousins who are straight cis short different Asian women of colour. Another cousin is a straight cis half yet-another-different Asian woman of colour. I love them all. Except for my wife, who still has a bit of an accent and cooks a variety of foods, I rarely notice that they are anything other than regular people.

by Main_Diver 9 months ago

What is a regular person? Did you mean straight cis average height man?

by Anonymous 9 months ago

I feel like this can overall be a more harmful mindset socially than helpful. Just by engaging with someone in conversation normally, you will figure out if you want to continue talking pretty quickly anyway, and would probably lead to more healthy interactions in general

by Anonymous 9 months ago

That's...not how conversation works.

by lakinaugustus 9 months ago

Easier? Maybe. More boring? For sure.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

I don't think these things should significantly impact your ability to hold every type of conversation, I think it becomes relevant when it becomes relevant. Until then, we can still have pleasant and meaningful interactions with people we disagree with. We can even change their view on the "other side" when we present as kind and human and complex, and defy what stereotype they may hold. I've ended up challenging people's views and even given some people the confirmation they needed to break away from their own bigoted circles just by continuing to interact and to show them I'm a person.

by beatriceparisia 9 months ago

That's an absolutely terrible way to go about life. Probably you "Um can you label yourself so I can judge?" The far left has become a mirror image of the far right.

by Designer-Estimate371 9 months ago

You have a pretty inflated sense of self importance don't you?

by Schaeferjennyfe 9 months ago

Yeah. If it helps someone that's fine but I don't like when people try to force labels onto others. It's not helpful for everyone. I often prefer not using labels.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

I stay away from people who introduce themselves and start saying their labels. It's just so ridiculous. I remember when I was in middle school we'd have these discussions about having no labels and being equal. Look where we are now. It's a circus.

by Special_Passenger 9 months ago

I can't say I have ever had someone introduce themselves and follow it up with their labels. I guess I am just lucky.

by tiarachristians 9 months ago

Ppl do that ? Like Hi I am George , I'm black , gay and 30% filpeno?

by Low_Marzipan7217 9 months ago

The disconnect caused by social media has led to desperation for individuality and recognition.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

That and ADHD. It's annoying atp. Like no, Anna, it's not a flex that you have 9 pronouns and 7 mental illnesses to match (6 of which are probably self diagnosed)

by Anonymous 9 months ago

You can tell who is self diagnosed with a mental illness/disability when they make it their whole personality

by Unfair_Asparagus 9 months ago

Ugh, I agree. I strongly seriously agree with you. I mean, I could go on a whole rampage on this. For me, a label is shorthand for a group of symptoms. BUT: that doesn't mean all symptoms must be present for the label to still apply. Even though, semantically, it kinda does. But it shouldn't. I hate gatekeeping. Too many people wanting to be diagnosed before they seek therapy. Treat the symptoms, not the label. I'm a human, you're a human. We're animals. That's pretty much all the labeling we need. Everything else is just what makes us us. I really hate sorting people into boxes.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Seems to be a spill over of tumblr and social media platforms that like labeling people especially in their bios. It has spilled over into real life.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Yep, it's compete self-obsession and vanity. The more labels, the more you can get people to either accept you for no other reason than your label or make them feel sorry for you.

by tiarachristians 9 months ago

As a non binary ethically non monogamous anarcho-communist pastafarian I take offense to these remarks

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Lol

by Arlie17 9 months ago

Everyone want to feel special.

by Hot-Roll 9 months ago

And how else are you supposed to know what you're buying without labels? Your can of beans could actually be herings

by laurencemccullo 9 months ago

Yeah, it's kind of arbitrary sometimes.

by Arlie17 9 months ago

I like having words to describe myself, personally.

by kolehirthe 9 months ago

But there's a difference between having words to describe yourself, and having words to describe yourself to others.

by Miserable-Radish 9 months ago

The words I use are the same regardless. Unless the implication is 'keep it to myself', in which case, womp womp

by kolehirthe 9 months ago

Fair. I think it works for some and doesnt for others. I feel like labels sort of put me in a box and I don't like the assumptions and expectations people put onto that

by Serious-Shoulder 9 months ago

Yeah, I fully agree. It puts people into boxes. And it's reductive. Humans are nuanced. Like, ya know, one redhead isn't the same as another redhead isn't the same as another. One gamer isn't the same as another gamer isn't the same as another gamer, etc. But people have these elaborate, sometimes convoluted, expectations based on a single label descriptor.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Yeah, i agree that there are nuances. Like, have a words to describe yourself is fine, but when you try to rigidly sort anyone and anything into it then it become a problem. That's why i dislike the "egg" metaphor of trans community, its fine for people to use it to desrcibe their formerself, its become problem when they try to call anyone who didnt conform social expectations of their own gender an "egg"

by Murky-Cake-1968 9 months ago

Once you label me, you negate me

by Anonymous 9 months ago

How much stigma would you say u receive when you tell people that u r bi

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Why does your sexual orientation matter IRL?

by RestThin379 9 months ago

What's an example of a label that's not either important or fun?

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Non-binary. Easy, next?

by Dino44 9 months ago

by DressPristine3986 9 months ago

Cringe-ass Love Island viewers 🤢

by Anonymous 9 months ago

That's not a label, it's a rejection of labels, just like OP wants.

by Cultural_Reason 9 months ago

It is definitely a label

by Initial_Cricket_1035 9 months ago

It is a label though

by Unfair_Asparagus 9 months ago

They say man or woman 😂

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Soooo, labels like man and woman? It absolutely makes someone a bigot to dislike a group simply because of who they are, in fact it is the very definition. It is just someone being mad that people different from them exist 🤷‍♀️ Replace non-binary to bisexual, and it is pretty obviously bigotry. Some people are different to you, and buddy, that's fine. Labels exist so they feel less alone

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Stupid people filing stupid lawsuits proving they're stupid. Companies putting stupid labels on everything to end stupid lawsuits.

by donnellyhildega 9 months ago

Fat agree

by Anonymous 9 months ago

As a mixed race, bisexual, brunette, short, agnostic, married woman and mother of colour I find most labels unnecessary. It almost feels regressive.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Im gonna put you inside a box, and then put that box inside another box and then I'll mail that box to myself!

by Quiet_Assumption4603 9 months ago

I agree tbh. Like people can label themselves all they want I guess but it's annoying when people try to label you when you don't care about it. I think a lot of it is unnecessary, and people tend to make it their whole personality, but I guess if it helps them feel better then more power to em. If anything it seems like a burden because you essentially force yourself to conform to whatever stereotypes come with the label, instead of just being able to be yourself

by Unfair_Asparagus 9 months ago

I like labels to categorize but they shouldn't be people's whole identity

by No_Toe_1756 9 months ago

I was thinking of labels like those signs in homes that say "kitchen" or "pantry" and I agree regardless

by Haleychristina 9 months ago

People feel connected to things

by Anonymous 9 months ago

You can feel connected to things without labeling them

by Stunning-Bid-5149 9 months ago

Exactly. We all go through similar trials, have similar feelings, even if they're extremely unique to us as individuals. We don't have to reduce our stories to a single label to be able to connect.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

But feeling connected to something often means putting a word to it.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

no, people are too connected to words.

by Batzbeatrice 9 months ago

Get off whatever discord or tiktok crap your following. The regular adult working world has absolutely none of this brain rot. And this is coming from huge gay.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Huge gay is too many labels, I bet you are like 6"

by Anonymous 9 months ago

The regular adult working world has absolutely none of this brain rot. As someone who is part of "the regular adult working world"... Yes, it does. I'm sure there are some lines of work where it is less so, but I've been forced to watch more than enough videos about diversity and inclusion to genuinely believe any company is free from the brain rot.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Can't take anyone who says "sweet summer child" seriously.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Its because, everything is happening all at once. In my day, you were a nerd, or a jock, or a preppy, or a poors, or a rocker... now you can be it all. You can be Captain of the Basketball team, who loves anime and cosplay, and is a DJ on the side. This was not possible before. In other words, it sucks balls now. :)

by Demario44 9 months ago

So, you hate it when people aren't movie characters and have depth?

by Anonymous 9 months ago

labels are the opposite of depth.

by Expensive_Cut 9 months ago

Their example was someone who played basketball, liked anime, and did DJing, and they were annoyed that someone did all these things. How is that not depth? Someone that does these things has a lot more depth than someone who is just a jock.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

How is any of that stuff related to depth of character? A persons emotional traits, their capacity for empathy, or lack thereof? their worldviews? Their level of intellect? Their capacity for courage or honor? Their moral values? Thinking that a person with more hobbies than someone else makes them "deeper" is laughable.

by Expensive_Cut 9 months ago

Empathetic, intelligent, courageous , moral; these are all labels

by Anonymous 9 months ago

The simple fact is ppl want to feel like they belong

by Anonymous 9 months ago

people need to love themselves more. belong with yourself, not with other random people who don't matter.

by Batzbeatrice 9 months ago

I feel like young people want to feel like they're different, actually. They want to feel so unique. It's pretty sad.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Aren't names a label?

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Yeah and sometimes people bond by having the same name, lol. Like that group of Georges over there.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Interesting philosophical point. But they're necessary to identify people.

by Arlie17 9 months ago

OP thinks being blonde is important enough to include that particular label in their username.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Are these "everyone" in the room with us right now Don Quixote?

by Anonymous 9 months ago

The first label was "normal." All labels since then are part of the social struggle to define what normal is.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

i think it depends on the person, a lot of people find joy in being able to label themselves to death and find it to be a way to express themselves. i'm obnoxiously against labelling myself because it's only ever made me confused. it's a personal thing imo

by Emergency_Algae_5669 9 months ago

Sure I'm non-binary, aroace and all, but I never start any convo with that. Hell, most times I don't even talk about that because there's no need for it (don't get me wrong it's not like I'm embarrassed/not out yet/etc. It just doesn't feel needed often for me to display that part of my identity upfront) I just go around in this world as some pile of flesh with a consciousness and that's enough for me yk

by Anonymous 9 months ago

I have enough stress in my life than allowing people like this to bring me down. polite avoidance.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

OP is such a Virgo

by No_Pressure 9 months ago

meh - you need to be able to categorise people though. It's necessary to communication and to our own internal "sorting system" A couple more labels (like what do you mean? Gen Z, Furries, MAGA - like those labels? ) adding or removing a few categories really shouldn't be throwing your whole world into a tailspin. I'm not sure I'd liken the human need to communicate to a "competition" and I think you might be ascribing a little more power to these "labels" than they warrant. They're just words, man

by Schaeferjennyfe 9 months ago

"Nowadays"?

by jacobiaddie 9 months ago

Current times

by Arlie17 9 months ago

I agree it's much more annoying nowadays than it was in nineteen-tickety-two. Nowadays is a perfectly cromulent word.

by mara50 9 months ago

I AGREE. i used to struggle with this when i was in high school because back then, you had to have a label and stick to it and it's like bruh i just wanna vibe and explore. i never liked being in a box.

by Batzbeatrice 9 months ago

"Old man yells at minorities"

by Anonymous 9 months ago

I agree. Let's start with getting rid of food labels.

by borerlaverna 9 months ago

Trans flag in user flair

by Mindless_Relief 9 months ago

Disagree. Kids especially have been obssessed with labels for a long time. Even that period where the label was "I'm not into labels". Again you're just more aware of it cause you're online and plugged into things.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Yup, I remember being a teenager in the late '90s and lots of people having this exact sentiment.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

What an odd thing to bitch about.

by pfefferclarissa 9 months ago

Words are labels. Every time you speak or write something you are using labels. We would not be able to communicate without labels.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Oh my God, you are being so pedantic.

by Arlie17 9 months ago

It's so rude of you to label others!

by Anonymous 9 months ago

Pedantic is just a label. Why are you so obsessed with labeling everything?

by Anonymous 9 months ago

I think you know what I'm trying to say. You're just being annoying at this point.

by Arlie17 9 months ago

Give some examples of the labels you think are unnecessary.

by Anonymous 9 months ago

When did I mention LGBT at all? You are just assuming things at this point. I'm LGBT myself, by the way.

by Arlie17 9 months ago

How does it affect you if others have labels? If you don't want to have any, don't. If others tell you theirs, you can either use them to be respectful or ignore them and rant about it.
