Honestly, let's think about it. A company with high turnover is likely to be bad. A high turnover company is also going to need to hire more often. This seems less like an opinion and more of an observation. This seems like basic math to me.

Sometimes it takes some "tough love" to get the message across…😉

Need someone with 10 years of experience and x, y, z certifications for [insert minimum wage here]. Oh gee golly government, we can't find anyone to do it! Can we import a foreigner with half that and pay them [insert minimum wage here]?

This here - it happens and so few people know about it

by goodwinnikki 10 months ago

Agreed, but for me and I think many others its basically the only option we got.

This is not just a popular opinion, but commonly recommended career advice. Networking is essential.

by Anonymous 10 months ago

I feel like that would highly depend on your industry. The vast majority of the workforce still only has a high school education or non-utilized bachelors, work in jobs where networking ends with "oh I worked with Rita at Walmart 2 years ago!", and haplessly search CL/indeed/job banks assuming their next gig will somehow be different than the last 10.

Company I work for pretty much only hires if someone retires or they expand.

Are you holding out for a management position?

by zelmaruecker 10 months ago

That's mostly true for low level jobs

by Anonymous 10 months ago

Nah. The issue is largely how trash the platforms are. It's honestly remarkable how difficult it is to search for a job. I've never found a decent platform that actually features a proper search engine. And listings are not required to list pretty vital information. And half of what they do list is in an incoherent blurb that doesn't factor into search results. It's very annoying.

I was lucky enough to actually land a decent role via LinkedIn. Good salary and benefit with wfh. The previous two I found from Indeed were absolute trash though, but they helped me gain valuable experiences.

Not always true If you get a PhD in electrical engineering and have a good platform to advocate for yourself, it is possible to go straight to a 300K a year job. Research jobs tend to pay well because they are in high demand. For most corporate jobs though, the best ones tend to be internal hires tho, or by those with connections

by Downtown-Finish-3074 10 months ago

He's talking about "most jobs", and "most jobs" aren't for EE PhDs.

by heffertz 10 months ago

I am just pointing out that research jobs for highly educated people are good jobs that usually aren't nepotism hires

by Downtown-Finish-3074 10 months ago

Getting a PhD in EE ain't easy. Those spots are competitive as hell.

by lockmancamron 10 months ago

I know people who have done it, it isn't easy but it's doable

by Downtown-Finish-3074 10 months ago

I know people who've done it, too. I take their classes. My supervisor is a PhD too. But they make something like 0.001% of the population.

by lockmancamron 10 months ago

It's possible but there are barely any 300k EE jobs.
