+48 It's not the cashiers job to figure out what pump you're on. amirite?

by baileypaula 2 weeks ago

I highly doubt this is an unpopular opinion..

by No_Jaguar 2 weeks ago

Considering he's getting a decent amount of pushback maybe this actually is unpopular.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

On what planet would this be unpopular?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Probably to the people expecting the cashier to know what pump they're on.

by Business-Issue 2 weeks ago

I had no idea people even did this, if that's true this may be a universally disliked thing by gas station employees. I can only imagine

by HotCall7825 2 weeks ago

I don't think there is much difference between this scenario and asking a grocery store employee which aisle flour is on or a server if there are nuts in the brownie. It's a customer service roll, the employee should be able to answer pretty basic questions.

by Honest-Spray1868 2 weeks ago

"Where do you keep the flour?" And "Where did I park?" Are 2 totally different questions. In one the clerk will have put the item where it is in the other you put the item where it is.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I think it's opposite sides of the same equation: "I have this piece of information, what is the other piece of this transaction?" Is it any different than saying "I want to put $20 on pump 3, which one is that?" "I want flour, where is that located?"

by Honest-Spray1868 2 weeks ago

The big difference is that info was known a head of time. You pulling up and expecting someone who gets paid minimum wages to magically know where you parked your personal vehicle is dumb. If you can't have the decency to look up for 3 seconds to remember a single 1 to 2 digit number you're the asshole in that situation everytime

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

The difference is that it's inconvenient to find the answers to those questions beforehand. It's more like asking a server if they have a certain menu item when it's right on the menu in front of you. Or asking where the flour is when you're already in the baking aisle.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

No matter the scenario, it comes down to customer service. The customer isn't out to annoy the employee or make them serve them; it's a simple question that a decent employee should have an answer for.

by Honest-Spray1868 2 weeks ago

The location of the flour is information from inside the store. The customer didn't put the flour somewhere. Where the customer parked is entirely different. One is customer service; the other is completely irrelevant to customer service. It's like asking an airline 'i can't find my luggage, can you tell me what colour it is?' Is the airline bad for not being able to answer that?

by Jett48 2 weeks ago

The complaint isn't about making the employee do extra work. It's lack of consideration of the time it takes to do that while others are waiting behind you. You're ok making others wait to make YOUR shopping experience easier. Dickbag move

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

It's 3sec of "extra" wait time. You might as well complain about people choosing which scratch cards they're buying or the employee finding the right pack of smokes. "Which pump is <provide location>?" "Oh, that's pump 2". "Cool can I get $20 on 2?"

by Honest-Spray1868 2 weeks ago

Excuse me but can you tell me where my car is?

by Lavernaortiz 2 weeks ago

"Hey my car is right there, which pump is that?" No one is asking the employee to be physic, just aware of their place of work.

by Honest-Spray1868 2 weeks ago

I feel like it's a hyperbolic example to drum up support; I've got a lot more faith in humanity to not be deliberately obtuse. Maybe 1/10 people don't pay at the pump, and another 1/10 don't know what pump they're on. Maybe in 100 people ask the attendant; and I'd put money on 90% of them describing their car and location in as much detail as is relevant.

by Honest-Spray1868 2 weeks ago

9/10 they'll ask which one, customer will tell them grey jeep, they'll look down at the camera or just look outside. It's peevey for sure but not the end of the world. Plus I think a lot of people just can't see as well as they believe are can't see the pump from inside.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

The cameras at the station I go to are black and white.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

On a normal day at a normal time it's a minor inconvenience yes but during the busy part of the day where every customer behind you is becoming more agitated and the cashier has to deal with that it's not a minor inconvenience. In previous jobs I've lost my lunch break because of customer wasting time with things they could have easily done before. To them it's 5 min to me it's now working 10 hours without eatting anything.

by Lavernaortiz 2 weeks ago

You go inside?

by Williamsonole 2 weeks ago

You can look when you park, when you get out the car, when you get to the store door, and when your next in line and still forget once you get to the register. It's just a gas station mystery.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Ok yeah, if someone gets to the register and is like "omg how did I forget what the number was?!? I'm sorry, it's the red pickup on the left side" that's fine. It's the people who slap money on the counter and go "$20 on the truck" and start walking away without noticing there's four damn trucks. Screw them

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

You can't remember a single digit number???

by HotCall7825 2 weeks ago

Have you never walked into a room and forgotten why you went in the room?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

ITS. JUST. A. GAS. STATION. MYSTERY.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Who doesn't tell the cashier their pump number?

by gilda96 2 weeks ago

Some people forget to look, some just don't remember. Distraction is a real thing, and honestly is really that much extra effort for the employees?

by Honest-Spray1868 2 weeks ago

Tbh I've never been at a petrol station where you can't see the number from inside where you pay, so sometimes I double check once inside/at the desk. But I'd never expect the employee to go out of their way to find out my number. I'm seeing buccees mentioned here I guess they have an inefficient amount of pumps if you can't see the number from inside.

by gilda96 2 weeks ago

So you found the one person who thinks that

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

i agree if the pumps are marked

by Aokuneva 2 weeks ago

Are they ever not marked?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

And you think this is an unpopular opinion because…?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Two things can be true… you should absolutely check and know what pump you are on. It's also literally the Cashiers job to help if you don't know. It's annoying sure, but just because a client is being stupid it doesn't make it less a part of their job to assist. If there were no stupid clients there would be a lot less jobs.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Conversation I overheard at a 7-Eleven years back: Cashier: "Which pump?" Customer: (leaning over and squinting to look outside, with a slight chuckle) "Man, I'm so high I can't even see my car."

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Unpopular opinion: it's not abnormal for people to forget the number. The alternative is the customer potentially leaving line and looking and holding up the process. Even if they leave the line and go to the back of the line (which most people wouldn't be willing to do) it still slows down the process. Imo, part of customer service is being asked dumb questions repetitively. If its not that dumb question, its a different one. You don't have to work in customer service if that's not for you. Source: 10+ years of customer service

by No_Needleworker5972 2 weeks ago

Generally yeah, but it shouldn't be the world's greatest faux pas if you forgot to look at it. An employs there to help the customers.

by Honest-Spray1868 2 weeks ago

It would give me so much social anxiety to not know what pump I was on. Can you imagine doing that at a place like Buc-ee's?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I'm doing everything in my power for no human interaction. I usually pay at the pump. When the screen says "see cashier" the slight panic will make me forget to remember my pump number 100% of the time.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I avoid this problem completely by always paying for my gas at the pump. I've been lucky enough to not run into any pumps that don't have this feature the last few years.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Im confused. Who pays for gas with a cashier?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Well you sound delightful to speak to. I don't think retail is the right job for you...

by Brad48 2 weeks ago

How hard is it too just look at the number of the pump when you walk into a gas station to pay for gas? I can understand a cashier being tired of dealing with this 47 times a day, but at the same time, many gas stations are terribly designed and have confusing signs.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

People have gotten incredibly lazy.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Also do you work at a gas station?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

This is unpopular?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Buccee's checking in. There are 130 pumps out there..

by sunnyweissnat 2 weeks ago

Haha could you imagine? "Yeah I'm on the second row of the pumps… which lane? Idk it took me about 15min to walk here, which lane do you think that is?"

by Honest-Spray1868 2 weeks ago

Please God tell me if there's 140 pumps that pay at pump is available

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Sometimes you simply forget and sometimes you can ask the clerk and sometimes they know what number it is and then sometimes you have to walk back outside and find out for yourself. I hope this is the greatest inconvenience that you will experience in your lifetime.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

There are still people who don't pay at the pump? That seems like the bigger issue lol.

by Candid-Tennis 2 weeks ago

Thank you. I can't believe it either

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

You are not wrong, but a good gas attendant knows what pump there customers are on.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Works fine at a small station when it is slow. Busy and dozen plus pumps it is unrealistic.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

wow. if you are this bent out of shape being a gas station cashier, imagine how hard your life would be if you had an actually hard & stressful job. every job has its own challenges and frustrations, but my god dude, this is the absolute dumbest thing to complain about.

by Kade56 2 weeks ago

At the station I go to cashiers can't see some of the pumps.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

But you know the general layout… "it's the 2nd row in next closest to the store". "Oh, that's pump 7".

by Honest-Spray1868 2 weeks ago

Some large stations might have 15-20 pumps.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Fine for small stations when slow. Not so much for larger ones or when busy. Station I worked in had 44 pumps. If you are one of 2 or 3 people fine, we'll figure it out. If 20+ of the pumps are occupied and you say "the red car" I'm sending you outside to get your pump number. If you can't remember the number, be specific when describing your car.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I was absolutely prepared to come in her and complain about this not being unpopular only to see people actually defending folks walking into a gas station and not knowing what pump they're at. Entitlement is rampant.

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

I forgot no one is supposed to ask basic customer service questions.

by Honest-Spray1868 2 weeks ago

Sorry... What? Op, what are you rambling on about? How on earth would this ever be an unpopular opinion. People who behave in this way are universally considered assholes. Like... What? I swear I live on a different planet to most people sometimes...

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

If they don't know can't they just look at the cameras?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

Ever look at gas station CCTV?

by Anonymous 2 weeks ago

No
