+39 They should ban the recline function on airplane seats in coach. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Just recline them all.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

exactly, I only recline when it's an overnight flight and I want to try and sleep and I then assume the person behind me is likely doing the same

by abigailfisher 1 week ago

3D print a knee defender

by desireewalker 1 week ago

Exactly. People would rather have issues with other people rather than aiming their irritation at the root of the issue

by Fit_Lobster_761 1 week ago

This sums up the US political atmosphere

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Unless airline A hired a competent ad agency and advertised roomier seats.

by No_Recognition 1 week ago

They mostly all have done so. Most carriers (US at least) offer premium economy with more leg room. The cheapest seats still sell out first.

by Even_Recognition_151 1 week ago

PREACH! It wasn't always this way.

by Correct-Cap6428 1 week ago

Oh, don't get me started on how flying used to be enjoyable 25-30 years ago. Or at least it was significantly more enjoyable than it is now. They nickel and dime the hell out of you now, and what they offer doesn't improve the experience much at all.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

And have you looked at the price of airline tickets "then" compared to now (adjusted for inflation)?

by Famous-Leadership 1 week ago

Yeah, let's make it like before, when only the wealthy could travel by air

by ChapterNice 1 week ago

Consumers have shown time and time again that they value price over anything else when it comes to air travel. Hence ultra low budget airlines making bank. Those who value other things can purchase them separately. Airline ticket prices are surprisingly stable, and in some cases, prices have come down so as to make it affordable for people who before couldn't travel by plane. This is one of the (very few) cases when it's not really (purely) greed, but consumer choice, albeit at a macro level.

by ChapterNice 1 week ago

There's a recline button for a reason. I'll be damned if I sit up straight on a 13 hours overseas flight. You can't fit? Buy an upgrade. I'm small. I fit just fine.

by WinUnique 1 week ago

I got you beat. I'm 164cm and slim. As far as concerts go, I buy the close to the stage seats.

by WinUnique 1 week ago

You can get very comfortable on any airplane - you get a business or first class seat. If you want airlines to have, say, 10% fewer seats in economy, then you can expect your ticket price to go up proportionately.

by Adorable_Edge 1 week ago

I'll take the 10% price increase (vs approx 60% for premium economy) if there's 10% less seats.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'd happily pay 10% more for a few more inches.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

many others would disagree, if they're complaining on paying an extra $1 per gallon, can only imagine a spirit plane ticket rising from $67 to $100

by kareemkoepp 1 week ago

Except 10% would be $67 to just under $74. I'll pay $74 gladly if it means I get 10% more room. I'll pay $100 for 30% more room.

by marvinwhitney 1 week ago

Sounds good. So I assume you are willing to pay significantly more for your flights as a result of increased costs from fitting fewer people on the plane?

by wilhelmine37 1 week ago

There's no way in hell they'll do that. They are commercial companies with the goal of maximizing profits. Planes are expensive. If you shove more passengers, you save a lot of money. OP's suggestion is practical and basically doesn't cost the airline nothing.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Most cheap airline companies doing short flights do not have them already.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If everyone reclined, there wouldn't be an issue

by Such_Friendship 1 week ago

I'm 5'9 and 'd prefer the person in front of me to recline over being upright because when the chair in front is at 90* my kneecaps are right up against them. Being tall (and I'm not even that tall!!) on planes these days sucks.

by Fun_Championship 1 week ago

That and the "recline" is less than 5° back anyway. Feels more like they aren't upright without it but inclined to ~87° and push back to ~92°

by Charming-Complex 1 week ago

My first time on a plane I reclined the seat and laughed "is this what everyone complains about????"

by Altenwerthamir 1 week ago

I saw someone breakdown the design changes, somewhere, over years, and they have steadily reduced overall recline to fit 2-3 more rows of seats as flying became more common. They even broke down how a 5° incline, specifically, isn't noticeable at leg height for the vast majority of passengers. I am also quite tall and have given up on reclining but I can't tell if leaning my weight on the fold down tray tables is helping the person in front, by bending it back a bit more, or annoying them by shifting the seat unexpectedly.

by Charming-Complex 1 week ago

How would it be the same amount as before? You are going into the space of the person behind you

by Anonymous 1 week ago

This is not an unpopular opinion. This is a very popular debate that splits the population roughly 50/50.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

In that case, we should assign seats on a plane by preference, and each group gets one half of the plane split lengthwise. Tadaaa, peace!

by Rosaliafriesen 1 week ago

I don't think so, I think the no Recliners are MAYBE 10% of the population, probly significantly less. I mean 50%+ of the population aren't even physically large enough to notice.

by No_Recognition 1 week ago

Idgaf. I paid for my seat and until they remove the recline function, I'm going alllll the way back when I can

by Garry86 1 week ago

I will die on this hill with you. People act like it reclines to a sleeping position. It's like 2 inches

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Sign me up for the battle. I'm in.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

🫡

by Altenwerthamir 1 week ago

I too will die on this hill with you worthy folks.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I paid for the tray on the back of your seat, so until they remove it it'll be slappin' that sonobitch up and down like a pogo stick.

by steviedavis 1 week ago

I absolutely care more about myself compared to strangers on a plane. As long as coach seats are uncomfortable I'm going to keep reclining

by maybellemante 1 week ago

So your suggestions is...to make everyone in the entire row recline to get their personal space back????

by boehmjoyce 1 week ago

to get their personal space back? If this is your concern, pony up the cash to fly 1st class.

by Emotional_Nail 1 week ago

no

by boehmjoyce 1 week ago

And if you have a hot drink on your tray when the person in front suddenly reclines?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You obviously do it slowly. That's what I always do

by WinUnique 1 week ago

If you cared about me more than you cared about you, you'd want me to recline.

by Mullerjuanita 1 week ago

All seats tilted back at the same angle and some decent lumbar support would be nice though

by No_Promotion_4138 1 week ago

I'm going to assume you don't take long flights. Try taking 17 hour flight without a reclining seat. And in those situations it's really not a big deal. When it's "bedtime" almond st everyone reclines.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

"you show that you care more about yourself than people around you." Says the person who cares that they remain comfortable at the cost of someone else's discomfort

by tierrathompson 1 week ago

Always my favorite take on this.

by nosinski 1 week ago

They should ban pretty big guys from coach. This is a nonissue for me.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Nmf planes are uncomfortable

by Cassandra68 1 week ago

They should space seats out more. They charge more money and you get less space.

by Reannawillms 1 week ago

Get rid of seats altogether for coach and make the poors stand the whole time. We can get more people on the plane and we should also charge more for the fatties since it costs more fuel to fly them from point a to point b. More revenue per passenger and more volume.

by Fit-Possibility 1 week ago

🤣🤣🤣

by WinUnique 1 week ago

Also, reduce the luggage allowance of obese people

by desireewalker 1 week ago

There's products like this on the marker

by No_Recognition 1 week ago

Might as well have everyone stand or lay down like on the old slave ships if that is how you feel about the filthy poors /s

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Sorry my dude, you're not more important than my back problems.

by bodeclifford 1 week ago

The airline industry laughing at you cause you're mad at other people for reclining half an inch and not them for cramming that one more row of seats in 😆

by Jdavis 1 week ago

We all care about ourselves more than the people around us. Did you offer to buy their tickets? Did you cook them lunch? No? Because of course not. I care about your well-being and general welfare, but do I care about you more than I care about me? Get real.

by Far-Desk1026 1 week ago

If there's a recline button, I'm pressing it.

by Lonely_Report 1 week ago

the seats recline about 2 inches my guy

by Anonymous 1 week ago

|| <-- actual space between reclining and upright.

by fschultz 1 week ago

And if you look to the left, you'll see this opinion again.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Sorry but your comfort doesnt matter to me. I bought the seat and Im going to make sure im comfy for my ride.

by balistreriodie 1 week ago

Im using all 3" of my recline feature get over it.

by WorldlyAardvark 1 week ago

I paid for my seat just as you did I'm reclining everytime I can You can recline too If you don't like it buy a better seat

by williamsonjudd 1 week ago

This, absolutely, right here. The man loves that we argue about what other people should do, not what the corporations or government did to create the problem in the first place.

by Far-Desk1026 1 week ago

Where are all these cramped coach seats, except maybe on ultra-budget carriers? I'm 6'2" and fly dozens of times per year and never have a space issue, even when the person in front of me reclines.

by conor97 1 week ago

pull up your bootstraps and you won't have to fly coach

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm also tall and can sometimes barely fit in an airline seat. However, the seat is meant to recline so if people want to, then they should be allowed to, unless it's during meal time. Can it be annoying? Definitely, but tbh I rarely have people recline in front of me, unless it's a long haul flight or overnight, in which case I recline myself.

by lubowitzbriana 1 week ago

I'm only 5'9 and I've been on a few planes where my kneecaps were right up against the seat in front of me. Considering plenty of people out there are taller than me, wtf do y'all do???

by Fun_Championship 1 week ago

For context I'm 6'4. It varies from plane to plane and how much space there is. First of all, I try to always get an aisle seat so I can at least straighten one leg and if I'm travelling with someone, I can stretch my leg towards their seat. If those options aren't possible, I can sometimes change my sitting position, which allows me to kinda stretch my legs below the seat in front of me. Planes used for long haul flights usually have more space for your legs, which allows some wiggle room. I have been on short haul flights where my knees were also up against the seat in front of me and where there wasn't really much to do. I could sometimes turn my body a little which can make a little room for my legs and sometimes I can (with difficulty) cross my legs.

by lubowitzbriana 1 week ago

Pretty sure OP double parks and is a dictator.

by No-Peach-7643 1 week ago

Can't say I disagree, but I think a better way to go about it would be to force the FAA (something you can do by pressuring your politicians) to recertify every aircraft for evacuations with the seats reclined. They are required to prove they can evacuate the aircraft completely in 90 seconds, and while the manufacturers use professionals to do it, they can accomplish this. Guaranteed they couldn't do it with them back. "But they have to be up on landing and takeoff" the clowns who like to lay back will cry. To which I say "plenty of entitled idiots recline back after the cabin crew is seated, so deal with it"

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm paying a fortune for the seat, I'm going to use it the way it's designed. Take it up with the airlines.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

i'll recline if i want ok? ok.

by heaneycamden 1 week ago

I will happily recline as far back as my seat can go. I like to sleep on planes and more importantly, I paid for the tickets

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yeah, and the person behind you won the airplane tickets at the lottery. What kind of argument is that?

by vonjunius 1 week ago

Exactly, there is no argument. If the airlines allows me the option to recline my seat, I will choose to accept it

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Except that, for example, you can't recline the seat while taking off or landing. And I imagine you are gonna pay for anything that the person behind you may spill over from the little table behind your backseat. Because if there the table, I am gonna use it, I paid for it. And if you break anything, well, you pay

by vonjunius 1 week ago

Why are things on that table when the plane is taking off or landing?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

When they offer you drinks on board where do you put them while not drinking?

by vonjunius 1 week ago

They do not allow you to have drinks when the plane is landing or taking off. The table is supposed to be in an upright position during those times as well.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I agree 100%

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Maybe on long haul flights when you want to sleep, but if you do you should ask the person behind you. On short flights, there's no need for it

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If the inch and a half that the seat tilts back makes YOU have less room....well.

by Alarming-Idea 1 week ago

Boo hoo

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Who should ban them?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

It's not that big a deal. Some people act like you murdered their child for wanting a little recline angle to rest better.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Hell YES! I will sign the petition. Same applies for coach style buses as well. As somone who rides the bus daily for my commute. it is so annoying having people recline into you and give you zero wiggle room. But to make things worse the mechanism on half the seats is broken... so instead of sitting upright you end up reclining unintentionally everytime the driver hits the gas too hard and have reset your seat.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If everyone reclines then everyone has the same amount of space and is more comfortable. I just did a 7 hour flight followed by a 14 hour flight - not a chance I'm sitting straight for all of that.

by ansley93 1 week ago

Maybe have all of the seats in recline position in the first place.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Sounds like a you problem pal. Good thing the airlines offer upgrades, otherwise ground travel is always an option

by No_Recognition 1 week ago

If the person in front of me reclines the seat, I simply put my weight all on my knees, and I push his seat back. Then, I pause, then again, then pause again, then again, like small little kicks, until the guy understands the situation. I am not gonna spend an unconformable voyage just for the benefit of an arrogant

by vonjunius 1 week ago

You need help.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

The seats barely tilt. I paid for it. I'm going to use it. Sorry not sorry

by Anonymous 1 week ago

As a regular traveler I'm exhausted by this opinion. For me, the difference between sitting straight up or reclining a few degrees for more than an hour is the difference between being able to stand up straight when I get where I'm going or hunching for a day and a half. And on another note, while being cognizant of other people's needs is impossible important, but taking my needs into account first doesn't make me selfish it makes me human.

by National_Plan 1 week ago

wouldn't be a problem if everyone reclined at the same time

by carolina95 1 week ago

I'm tall so my knees sit against the back of the seat in front of me unless I man spread. I normally just keep my knees straight in front and people struggle to recline before giving up. I wouldn't care so much about the recline if it didn't aggressively shake the tray table and spill things.

by Vegetable-Teach9968 1 week ago

Take a long haul flight and let's talk about it. It's literally not that big of a deal, except maybe while you're eating.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I choose to recline. Your opinion is unpopular with me.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

If the person in front reclined their seat all the way then I'll recline mine too. Hoping to start a domino effect LOL. Other than that, I like the reclining option. It just depends if the person is considerate or not. I tend to recline just a tad bit to be more comfy for long flights. No recline for shorter ones.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yes, they shouldn't be made like that. It's crazy that the quality of a flight varies far more depending on whether you have an a-hole sitting in front of you than potentially thousands in upgrades.

by Basic-Function-7384 1 week ago

Nah, you just need to save money

by Anonymous 1 week ago

This is just a weird embarrassment thing, I'm 6', not a giant by any means. It has never inconvenienced me when someone reclined their seat lol it goes back maybe 1". 100% recline your seats, idgaf. We're all sardines in the same can

by Anonymous 1 week ago

so, because you're fat and uncomfortable, everyone must get uncomfortable??? When travelling, I"ll recline my seat to the last position and sleep all the flight. I do care more about myself and I'm not willing to impose myself sacrifices in order to make your life less miserable

by Anonymous 1 week ago

I'm a tall man myself and do not care if the person in front of me reclines. What irks me is obese people buying a single seat when their body spills over the arm rest. I know its rude of me, but I think people at a certain size should be required to either buy first class or reserve 2 seats for themselves.

by HugeAssociation1768 1 week ago

That's not rude. It's common sense

by WinUnique 1 week ago

If the person in front of you reclines, you just go back with them. It's not comfortable to sit straight up right for 4-5 hours. Everyone should recline.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Why not just recline you paid for the seat? They don't tilt back that far

by Anonymous 1 week ago

We gotta take 'em where we can get 'em.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

and every sane person will just call the staff and tell them about the weirdo who is kicking your seat

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Sure there is. It's called getting over yourself

by Anonymous 1 week ago

You're right. There's no cure for what you've got

by WinUnique 1 week ago

Now imagine not being able to recline when the plane is half full.

by Huelmaci 1 week ago

I have long legs, I'm taking everything I can get.

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Seats are not supposed to be reclined during meal service

by WinUnique 1 week ago

The flight attendant asked him twice and each time he'd make a show of doing it and proceed not to straighten it. Big flight so once the attendant turned they'd be gone for like half an hour at a time

by Anonymous 1 week ago

There's an etiquette to it. Don't recline on short flights. But on long flights, everybody should recline together after they clear the first meal. Usually 60-90 minutes into the flight. It's a little more comfortable, everybody nets the same amount of space, and it's slightly less impossible to sleep. Usually people do that and everybody is cool.

by Correct-Cap6428 1 week ago

Evidently you've never traveled outside Alabama

by Gracieziemann 1 week ago

If everyone reclines everyone has the same legroom. So as long as you aren't in the row BEFORE an exit row - most of these won't recline - what's the big deal?
