+26 We struggle with everyday tasks because we're overwhelmed by distractions not because we have to work. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 week ago

Yeah Idk because people without those distractions still struggle. In the 90s it was the same tbh

i don't see how getting rid of these digital distractions will have any bearing on me spending 10+ hrs away from home

I spend 8* hours a day assisting adults with disabilities, making sure they don't run off or forget their medication and calling EMS for people all across the county for, adjusted for inflation less than my parents did working safer jobs with no education and 50% of my total pay would go to rent if I didn't work 50+ hours every other week But it's the phone that's wrong

If death could be avoided, I'd love something like a Carrington event.

I think this one needs to simmer a little more. You're going somewhere tho, I just don't think "distraction" is the word. Maybe "maintenance" in general. Maintaining finances, work life, job requirements, hygiene… basically every facet of life needs to be maintained and upheld. Also in retrospect now "distractions" is a good word for youth and children because they are innocent and focus on education. But adults get swept up with maintaining their livelihoods by completing tasks that kids arnt ready to realize.

I'm not sure it's unpopular just incorrect

I don't use social media and my phone is not a distraction. My energy goes towards work and that is why I'm tired lol

Projection my friend. My last several jobs have been incredibly stressful. Luckily I no longer have it too bad, but yeah I promise sometimes it is in fact someone's job. Try getting a call about a data center fire suppression system erroneously going off, only to find out the incorrect suppressant was used, and your company is down an entire DC 3 days before Black Friday. It wasn't social media that ruined that week for me.

The pace of work in the 90s was also drastically different. We went from physical letters (days), to emails (hours) to slack messages (minutes). Yes, we are distracted, but many of those distractions come from the work environment itself.

I can tell you don't work much

Bro. People have been struggling with everyday tasks for the entirety of humanity.

by Lenoreabbott 1 week ago

Yeah, it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that most of us are chained to our computers for 8+ hours a day AND have to commute to enjoy the privilege of doing it. /s in case it wasn't clear. People are TIRED. Watching tv, scrolling and other "lazy" activities are a necessary outlet for many of us to not go completely insane. Can social media be a distraction? Sure. But go ask people in their 30s who spend 10 hours a day working and commuting and their "free" time meal prepping, shopping, cleaning, laundry, dishes, childcare, pet care, errands, etc if social media is causing their fatigue. Be serious here.

Some people tend to be easily distracted because they have this thing called ADHD. I know because I'm one of them and I cannot function well with distractions around.

by Ottopredovic 1 week ago

Yup. I'm doing it right now reading and replying here instead of working on this spreadsheet project, which isn't technically that difficult.

The average working hours per year in the US have been slowly dropping since the 60s, the same for the mortality rate for elders and children. On the other side, education level across the country has never been this high, as does our consumption. Our parents and grandparents didn't used to buy phones, tvs, clothes, cars, other household machines nearly as much as today. And corporate profit aren't as much as you think them to be. Across industries, it's only about 10% or less. If big corporations are taking 95% of your labour value, why do they only making 10% gains on their products then?
