-32 I dont understand the hype around Korean Food, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

If you don't like gochujang sauce, you are going to hate a large amount of Korean food. It's in a lot of the most popular dishes. There's no fixing that.

by Organic-Rich 1 month ago

I'm wanting to make gochujang mayo now. This sounds good.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

that's what it is. the same sauce in all the dishes equals... kind of bland same-same all over the place

by carissa27 1 month ago

I've never had Korean food, what is this taste like? Can you explain it?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Very spicy sugar, with the texture of tomato paste. I'm a fan. It makes great wings.

by Able_Grand 1 month ago

Spicy sugar? That's an oxymoron isn't it? Now I'm extremely curious.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Not really an oxymoron, and i'm being a little facetious with my description. I would buy it and try some recipes. It's good, trust me!

by Able_Grand 1 month ago

I don't think it counts as an oxymoron as flavor groups don't really have opposites.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

The opposite of sweet would probably be bitter, not spicy.

by Marcaltenwerth 1 month ago

Have you ever had hot-honey?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

No! This is a thing? What?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

yes and it tends to be so sweet too which I dont like as well (especailly tettoboki) but I do love the soups just hope it's not too sweet

by FeedNo6160 1 month ago

Korean fried chicken is elite

by Abject_Proof_3260 1 month ago

Love me some BonChon

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Overpriced and overrated tbh

by Anonymous 1 month ago

kfc is nice indeed

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I have the same experience 😅 everything is just so sweet 🥲 except I really like kimchi

by AlfalfaExtreme 1 month ago

Edible, my friend. Not every cuisine is for everyone.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yeah I don't understand you at all. I love Korean food, Bibimbap Is like my ideal lunch. I like a slightly sweet chicken, kimchi is awesome and yachaejeon is a weekly staple in our house

by Turbulent-Annual 1 month ago

No suggestions here. Not every different cuisine appeals to everybody. I cannot abide kimchi either, but some BBQs are okay. I don't think your opinion will be as unpopular as you might think. How are you with Indian?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Never had the chance to try. But my fave has been syrian food so far. And my syrian friends told me its similar to indian. I think id like indian food.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Syrian food? OK, now I'm just getting jealous. I don't know where to find all these different foods in Wisconsin. I live in the US, and I didn't know all of these countries and cultures had their own separate cuisine, and I really want to try every single one of them.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Oh dude ı highly recommend it. Just try to find a place that cooks clean. Then I am sure it wont disappoint. Hummus, falafels, muhammarah, kubbeh and funnily even though syrians doesnt drink they are all great side dishes for alcohol.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

any bonchon chicken around you? try their fried chicken.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

i've always wanted to try that black bean sauce. is that the one that's fermented in big pots outside?

by carissa27 1 month ago

I believe so! Tastes exquisite with noodles in my humble opinion

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Spicy ttokboki with cheese >>>>

by LobsterMedical61 1 month ago

Sounds like you gave it a fair chance. I personally love it but in no way think you are being unfair in saying you don't like it.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

i also dislike korean food, compared to chinese/japanese/thai etc its really meh. but...i like korean fried chicken places.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Idk how reliable it is but one of my friend went to Korea for his honeymoon and he told me that after a while he craved salty food, everything was at least somewhat sweet and everything he tried had some sugar in it at one point he grabbed a can of pringles just to have some salty food and even those had some sweet in them, granted we're Italians and are not used to savory dishes having ANY sweet in them, so this probably worsened the experience

by Anonymous 1 month ago

This prob has some truth to it, because when I visited Italy from Korea (for about a month, 20+ years ago), I had a hard time going to restaurants because everything tasted too salty. I loved most of the homemade pastas, mozzarella, burrata, pizza margherita, and gelatos... but man, some of those restaurant foods took time to get used to.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yess! That's what I'm saying, it's not that a cuisine is good or bad, it's about what we're used to, for us Italians Korean might be too sweet or Indian too spiced for our tastes, but for an Indian our food might be bland as hell or as you said incredibly salty or lacking some balance in the sweet department. I think it's telling that here the most popular foreign restaurants by a mile are Japanese and Chinese, since the their most popular dishes (still talking about Italy) have relatively simple and straight forward flavours

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I dunno I had Korean food in Seoul and it didn't hit the spot for me

by Melyna18 1 month ago

I don't understand you

by Remote-Tax-9885 1 month ago

korean food can be spicy, one has to have a stomach for it

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I like spicy food. I think it was more about the sweetness.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Not sure how reliable your experience is and where you live can make a big difference. It seems like you've had the stereotypical k-pop food cuisine of Teokboki, Kimbap, bulgolgi, etc. Those are all pretty famous dishes in Korea, so I don't blame you. Korean food has gotten a lot sweeter than it is traditionally, and I think it has to do A LOT with the westernization of Korea and its culture. My suggestions: 1. 99% of restaurant made kimchi is ass. Especially in the states. The best kimchi is from kimchi specialty stores that sell to the local Koreans. Hard to find if you don't know how to look for it. 2. Try other food like Dwangjangjigae or Kimchi Jigae. Other stuff like Spicy seafood stew, Korean hungover soup, Galbitang, Galbi-jim are all options that aren't super stereotypically Korean.

Eatable?

Sry dude english is not my mother tongue. When ı translate it thats what comes up to be the most similar to what ı want to say.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I'm pretty sure the hype has less to do with the actual food, and more to do with the surge in popularity of K-dramas, which often feature tantalizing food porn shots.

by Nschuster 1 month ago

I used to avoid spicy food. During a late night at the food court, the stall I usually ordered from had closed down. The only stall that was open was the Korean stall next to it. Even though I couldn't remember what dish i ordered, it came with a side of kimchi. When I tried the kimchi, I found that I could handle the spice level, and I liked the combination of spicy, sour, and that kick from fermentation. It was my first time seeking out spicy food on my own and even though I don't handle spice well, I can now enjoy foods that child me would've shunned.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

edible not eatable

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Sry dude english is not my mother tongue. When ı translate it thats what comes up to be the most similar to what ı want to say. Let me change it real quick.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Never a problem. Thanks for ur nice reply. As ı always hear americans say "This made my day.".

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I would give up at least one finger for a solid Korean fried chicken joint IN MY STATE.

by mose31 1 month ago

I'm Asian in a sinosphere country . Majority of Korean food I've tried tastes bland, I only like their bbq beef and pork. I do like kimchi. Many Korean lives here, so I've tried many restaurants that Korean owners owned or cook it. Still dislike it. I don't like their instant noodle (soup type) either, much prefer Japanese instant noodle. Love eating Cantonese food, Japanese food and Vietnamese food.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I like vietnameese food as well. It s really great.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Try their seafood. Well do you like Japanese cuisine?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Yes ı absoluately do.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

First time I had kimchi it was so nasty I nearly vomited. I now eat it all the time. It's an acquired taste. As for everything else, idk what to tell you Korean food is bomb, maybe you've just gone to some crappy spots.

by Royal_Neighborhood74 1 month ago

I kinda sort of have the same position as you but I haven't been exposed to that much of it to really decide strongly one way or the other. I need a lot more experience to make a firm opinion but right now I am in the same camp of it's just okay. It seems very samey. I mean I like gojuchang but not in almost everything! It seems like a cuisine that is very samey. It's in the same camp as Mexican food which seems to be an endless combination of one or more of: chilli, tomato, beans, cheese, corn. Also see Indian food that is a lot more varied but still always just ends up tasting the same to me no matter what it is. Even the desserts tend to taste the same since they use a lot of the same ingredients that flavour the savoury dishes. Not to say I don't like those cuisines, I like them all, they just seem samey.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

As a big foodie and a Turk, ı would like to recommend turkish food. Because of the geographic conditions of Turkey. The food has hints from europe, balkans, asia and africa all together. They dont use the same combinations with every meal. Because its impossible to get the same material in the west and the east of the country.

Tastelet

by Sawaynevelyn 1 month ago

Kimchi is terrible. Bulgogi is fire.

by lola79 1 month ago

Hard disagree. I grew up with under seasoned chicken, well done steak, mushy vegetables and stouffer‘s lasagna. Discovering Korean, Indian and south East Asian food as a young adult was magical.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Korean fried chicken, Korean BBQ, buldak, jajangmyeon, bibimbap, japchae are all incredible.

by These_Truck 1 month ago

I have tried japchae and bibimbap as well. I just wanted my text to include the most popular dishes so ı can hear more opinions from more people. Japchae had that "too sweet" taste ım talking about as well.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

You don't like gochujang sauce and kimchi; so basically you were born with pretty bland taste buds. Just rejoice in the fact you can eat living a bland and cheap life I guess.

by Top_Ground 1 month ago

If you have an AYCE Korean BBQ restaurant in your area, it'll be the best opportunity to try different dishes. Sundubu-jjigae is really really good. Galbi is one of my favorites! Ttekbokki and mandu are delicious. Bonchon's spicy KFC is my jam with some kimchi bacon fried rice. Depending on my mood, I will order Japchae from Bonchon. I've found that I am picky about my kimchi. I tried the Trader Joe's kimbap and it's low key good in a pinch but it has to be cooled to a room temperature after heating in the microwave.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I did not like it at first either but then I realized I was "doing it wrong" I was eating the individual dishes when I was supposed to make little tacos out of the lettuce wraps. Now I love it.

by Maribelturner 1 month ago

Ye that could change some stuff ı guess. Not a bad ıdea at all. Thanks

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Oh wow 3 restaurants.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I enjoy Korean food but i think it's inferior to other Asian countries cuisines. If i had to do a tier list from best to worst it would be: Chinese (proper not the western style), Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean

by Nice_Swimming_7865 1 month ago

Vietnamese food is fire really. But havent tried thai, though ım very curious about it.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Did you only try the unhealthiest kind like street food? I'm not a sweets person at all myself but I love Korean food, especially the soups. What you mentioned is what's commonly sold in the States as an entree but it's far different in korea and im not only talking about bbq. Jokbal (braised soy sauce pig feet), jimdak (soy chicken and noodles), gamjatang (pork spine and potato soup), solangtang (beef brisket soup) and much more are far from the common street food you'd probably see.

by FeedNo6160 1 month ago

Do u have any suggestions for me that could change my ideas around it? Maybe a different food that ll change my wiew?

by Anonymous 1 month ago

If you're not into their stews or veggie stuff, try Korean BBQ. Galbi or samgyeupsal is available at most Korean restaurants. But make sure it's an authentic place where you have the grill at your table, not some "Americanized" version.

by Kingcedrick 1 month ago

Not sure. im.in the same boat as you i gave multiple chance for korean food and their food is either just taste salty, or sweet, i asked my friends who loves or kpop or kdrama too much and they agreed that korean food is overrated.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I understand the hype around Korean food Since Korean pop culture is popular, people tend to romanticize the nation and the romanticize the cuisine

by Jacyntheklocko 1 month ago

it couldn't be people that others have a different palate than yours.

by OkWorld2603 1 month ago

Some questions have many answers

by Jacyntheklocko 1 month ago

Eh, this isn't a wild or bad take any means. Some foods don't hit with ppl. I will say you are getting a bad roll with the foods because I have never had any sweet foods that should be savory. Veggies were always seasoned well. Personally, I hate Indian food. So everyone has their likes and dislikes

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I have. I just didnt mention it in my text.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Korean BBQ is not a good barometer for Korean food, your metaphor is reversed. It's like saying they hate American food and you tell them to try Burger King.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

I had a college roommate who was Korean. She kept raving about a place that had really good food. When we got there, it was just noodles with brown sauce. I think it was black bean sauce. I don't hate Korean food but a lot of it seems like peasant food. lol

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Ok so when it comes to food you're a basic bitch. That's ok.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

No ı like different cuisines, but just not Korean food maybe.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

But ok ı ll change it. Just be a little more kind before making assumptions pls.

by Anonymous 1 month ago

Try going beyond the same five dishes that is always in circulation because it's trendy. Korean cusine goes a lot farther beyond tteokbokki and kimbab. Seollangtang is my personal comfort food and there's also bossam, pajeon, ggalkkuksu, etc.

by Suspicious-Sir-4638 1 month ago

It's sooooo good
