+27 Henry Cavill wasn't THAT great of a Superman to begin with, amirite?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

What is his aura and motivation and how does that differ from what you believe superman's should be? I think Corenswet came across in the trailer as a fine superman but didn't seem to fit Clark as well, but no way to really tell until the film is released with it only being snippets.

Henry Cavill was shown as portrayed as a dark, gloomy character, David Corwe—f*ck it James Gunn's Superman looks colourful and hopeful, look at that bgm, those coours, how comically accurate it looks. If they REALLY want to do a dark and gloomy superman, throw it on a TV show or something but mainline movies should stick to a more colourful one. Tbh every DC movie has looked dark but don't do that with Superman c'mon.

heny cavill wasnt in charge of lighting and overall tone of the movie. hes just an actor. its why people usually say that henry cavill would make a great superman (because he looks the part), but he was wasted (because of choices from the director). imagine him as superman in a more colorful movie and then im sure you will begin to understand why people say that.

No it isn't Lol, Cavill was as good as a wooden plank

Bad films but perfect casting

Cavil didn't write the character, motivations, or anything else if you didn't realise. The dude is a good actor and has a good look for Superman. MoS was good and he could absolutely have been in more great Superman movies if the writing was better, his acting was never the issue.

I phrased this badly I think, obviously the actor is great but his character portrayal as THE SUPERMAN wasn't great. There

And that was down to Snyder writing his own fan fiction. He loves to make poor adaptations of superheros. I'm glad he's not doing the Witcher or Superman anymore as it means we'll see more great stuff from Cavill, pumped for the Warhammer stuff.

by Admirable-Market7228 4 months ago

Then that ain't an unpopular opinion. In fact, it's the most common opinion

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Maybe reading or watching any Superman material at all would have helped, but that is something I put on the director.

This is super well put

MoS was great.

It's probably the best Snyder movie. Which is kinda like being the healthiest patient on hospice...

He didn't have great material

I feel like especially in recent years people are retrospectively overrating Man of steel and overrating Henry as Superman / Clark Kent. I confess I would have liked to see what he could have done If the movie were better material for him. It was just too dark and brooding And that doesn't work for most superheroes, particularly Superman - Who is one of the more ridiculous on paper. That's why the original with Reeve is so great. He makes you believe that he's this insane superhero but also the type of person that would just like help people with random everyday things. Cavills superman was just brooding too heavily. And as much as people overrate it, I don't think Man of steel was that good. It was just blah. And also I felt like the supporting cast stunk, except for Michael Shannon - Who nails everything.

Tbf motivation and aura are totally script/direction problems. I think many (including Cavill if his favourite comics picks are anything to go by) would have liked to see him do the role in a tone more like Gunn's film than Snyder's. Actors are always limited by what a film does or doesn't demand of them.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Cavill seems to be a decent actor, but Snyder clearly wanted to do a Homelander movie series.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

So you believe he played the character well. Just not inside the movies he was playing him in?

by Anonymous 4 months ago

No I do not I very much dislike that whole stretch of DC movies, I like Cavill, in Witcher, and Ungentlemanly Warfare, but very much dislike his Superman films

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Cavill wasn't the problem, Zack Snyder was. but I agree that David looks great and I have hope that this movie will be good

by nschaefer 4 months ago

The faults of the Snyder movies are not on Cavill. He could've been great in a good movie. Given the circumstances, he did the best he could.

by Joy85 4 months ago

Yeah that was pretty agreed upon at the time. Hasn't been a good Superman movie since Reeves

by Anonymous 4 months ago

I don't think this is very unpopular. I don't know many people who think he was a great Superman. He was so stiff and unnatural. I love Cavill, but he was not right for that part. It may be a generational thing and that the younger people actually like his version.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Absolutely agreed. He just doesnt have that movie star charisma imo like somebody like cruise, bale or leo has. Also he was way better and utitlised as a spy in Mi fallout where i felt like he actually tried and it came off.

by nicklaus18 4 months ago

Cavil could've worked, but the movies barely depict him as anything but a godlike figure with barely any human aspects. He wasn't that great, but i feel like it's not entirely his fault.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

Jumping on to your wagon about Cavill, if you replaced him entirely with another actor but kept his acting style, would his portrayal of the role in superman still be hyped? Nah. There's your answer, he's a mediocre actor. His style of acting bleeds into all his characters, Witcher, Holmes, Superman, etc. same brooding, disturbed, quiet hulk

by zconnelly 4 months ago

Actors with a limited range but who are cast well can really shine. Snyder cast exactly the right actor for this harebrained concept of Superman.

by Anonymous 4 months ago

He had the perfect look but he has zero acting chops (for any role). The rest is bad writing and direction.

by Many-Crew 4 months ago

I genuinely have no idea how he's so well regarded he's terrible.

by Neither_Work_9810 4 months ago

Thankyou, superman just felt flat and defently not the beacon he's meant to be
