Pride can look very innocent at first, and quickly become very destructive. I think it's kind of like a "gateway sin"...it isn't too bad by itself, but it will lead you to other sins.

In all honesty I have no intention of flaming. Can someone explain to me why pride is a sin? I take pride in the fact that I'm Canadian, how does this lead me to any of the other sins.

All 7 of the deadly sins are inherit in human nature. It is impossible not to do all of them at some point. The point of them is that in excess they can be harmful. Gluttony can lead to health issues, same as Sloth. Wrath can lead to you hurting someone or or yourself. It's the same as Pride. You can be prideful of your country and it's a good thing. It when that Pride leads to other things that can be become dangerous. For example, you think you're country is the best so you want to take control of other countries because you think you're better (Like in Avatar when the Fire Nation wanted to lead the world cause they thought they were the best.)

Ah, that cleared things up for me. Thanks for the legitimate response.

Or a more generalized, common example, someone disrespects you, so you feel the need to get back at them twice as hard, that's basically pride.

Also pride could be compared to all that messy nationalism before World War 2.

I very much enjoyed the Avatar reference.

it's not the same kind of pride that means you're simply "proud" of something. It's the kind of pride where you are overconfident and think you are invincible. It means you lack humility. If you know what hubris is, it is similar.

Even though I'm agnostic, I feel like pride is actually one of the most important of the sins. (I don't believe in God but I whole-heartedly believe in the morals that the bible teaches people) For example, say you're driving down a road and a car is trying to pass you...With pride, you take offense to this competitive driving and feel compelled to speed up to not allow them to beat you, which could in turn cause an accident. Not only that, pride causes anger and aggression, which can cause dysfunction in relationships, communities, groups, companies, etc. I've learned that if you drop your pride, and not let people dictate your anger and aggression, you will be ultimately more happy. Although sometimes, especially in the situation above, i have a real problem with that.

A kid died for having too much pride...he told the killer to go ahead and kill him instead of begging for his life.

Isn't it also the original sin? Lucifer was banned from Heaven because of it
