Smoke detectors are too sensitive, and that's a drawback. amirite?

You have the wrong kind of smoke detector. There are two types. Ionizing smoke detectors tend to have a lot more false alarms in response to kitchen mishaps. Photoelectric smoke detectors have very few false alarms, and are also better at catching dangerous, slow smoldering fires.

It sounds like either your smoke detectors are malfunctioning and need to be replaced, or your appliances aren't as clears as you think they are.

Better safe than sorry! Would you rather the alarm go off once or twice because you are cooking sausages or would you rather they dont go off until a fire is already out of control?

I agree. While you have to be careful not to go too far in the other direction, having constant false alarms can lead to people missing a real one. Same principle as car alarms.

How close are your smoke detectors to the kitchen? Code forbids them to be placed in or near the kitchen for this reason. If they're the correct distance from cook surfaces you're doing something wrong and it's not the smoke detector.

Your kitchen needs more ventilation

I wonder if more expensive smoke detectors are less sensitive? I don't know how much mine were as they were in the house when we bought it, but they've never gone off while cooking. Other houses I've lived in definitely have though.

Is there an exhaust fan above the stove? Does it work? Is it on?

I once rented a house with a landlord who decided the kitchen was a good place to install a smoke detector. That thing went off when I boiled water, but oddly enough didn't go off when I blew weed smoke directly into it. I took it down, wrapped it in a towel, and then threw it in a closet after 2-3 weeks.

When did you get your smoke detectors? You're meant to replace them every 10 years

Also if paint is drying and you forgot to run fans or open windows. They can false alarm. Ask me how I know, at 3am

wrong. its functioning perfectly as a safety device.

You need to set up your smoke detectors correctly according to R314 of the international residential code, with the proper distances from cooking equipment

Also, seemingly dumb thing. But it does happen. Check to make sure the appliance above the stove is actually removing smoke. Needs to a tube up to the roof.

It's likely that your kitchen has poor ventilation or your appliances need a serious cleaning..
