+69 Cyan should be a basic color term, amirite?

by Mediocre_Example 2 weeks ago

It does... It's "cyan"

by ulangosh 2 weeks ago

we have more common terms like teal and aqua They aren't basic color terms because they are also sometimes referred to as blue, green, or blue-green. A basic color term needs to be unique & is not called a shade of another color term.

How does this look like green & blue? The only reason you feel cyan looks like blue is because the shades in between them like Azure are for some reason referred to as blue, not blue-cyan or cyan.

by Mediocre_Example 2 weeks ago

No you feel like cyan looks like blue is because to get cyan you need to combine green and blue light

Yellow doesn't look like Red+Green, Magenta doesn't look like Red+Blue & white/gray doesn't like like Red+Green+Blue even though they are made up of these colors. Why should Cyan be the exception?

by Mediocre_Example 2 weeks ago

What do you mean cyan is the exception?

by hildegardskiles 2 weeks ago

You're saying Cyan looks like a mixture of blue & green which doesn't follow the trend of colors that are an equal mixture of 1, 2, or 3 of Red, Green, & Blue that don't look like the colors they are composed of. So unless you're saying that white looks like red, green, & blue, you're saying that cyan is an exception.

by Mediocre_Example 2 weeks ago

I don't think it looks like a mixture of blue and green, I was just saying that it is

by hildegardskiles 2 weeks ago

Cyan is literally physically speaking the color between green and blue.

alright. describe cyan to me without using blue and green in your answer. what does it look like?

by Ambitious_Editor6183 2 weeks ago

You can't describe senses without using other senses to do so. Describe what slightly cold feels like? What does the color yellow look like? What does water in your mouth feel like?

by Mediocre_Example 2 weeks ago

Describe red

It's weird how you capitalize the one word you want to be considered common.

Pink does not exist as a color, it does not have a corresponding light frequency But it does activate the S & L cones. By that same logic, white isn't a color because it doesn't have a corresponding frequency. Not many things in our culture are cyan, or they are not important/frequent enough. The sky? Sometimes the beach? Some "blue" eyes?

by Mediocre_Example 2 weeks ago

By that same logic, white isn't a color because it doesn't have a corresponding frequency. White is a shade, its not a colour. Same goes for Black. The sky? Sometimes the beach? Some "blue" eyes? Where I am, the sky is currently transparent. The beach? I'm guessing water, water isn't blue.

by Princess61 2 weeks ago

Where I am, the sky is currently transparent. But it still looks cyan The beach? I'm guessing water, water isn't blue. Water has a blueish tint to it. That's why the ocean will get bluer the deeper you go. idk why it's cyanish on the beach though.

A basic color term needs to be unique & is not called a shade of another color term. Cyan is frequently called green, blue, blue-green, light blue, etc. That's why "dark green" or "rose" aren't considered basic color terms.

by Mediocre_Example 2 weeks ago

is it not ? i was under the impression cyan was almost as common as pink or purple

by grantthora 2 weeks ago

cyan and teal have a lot more street cred than the average person might assume
