+54 I like chatting on airplanes, amirite?

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I just want to be left alone, so I can watch shows on my phone. It seems like we're always next to each other.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Pick a good show, I'll watch over your shoulder!

Ask to share one of their earbuds

by Anonymous 5 days ago

It hasn't worked yet but I'll keep trying!

You are the reason my favorite seat is the left first class seat on an Embraer E-175. You people are monsters. Leave us alone.

I've chatted with people before if they're open to it, usually as the plane is preparing for takeoff, but after about 20 min I just wanna listen to my audiobook.

Try to sit next to an elderly person. They are more open to chatting because they were raised in a more social world. Also, you might get some interesting stories or gain a bit of wisdom. Last flight I went on, I was next to a senior women, and she was spectacular.

I don't want idle talk about work or the weather, but if you want to share animal facts or discuss psychology and the universe, okay sure

we should sit next to each other. I can talk cosmology and the Fermi Paradox for days.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Count me in, I'll even take the middle seat.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

What's the Fermi paradox?

by Any_Possibility 5 days ago

The thing is, there's pressure to keep it up. Sometimes you can chat the whole way but other times it comes to a weird end and you sit in silence until one of you says "Well." and pulls out their book. I prefer to break the ice when we're on initial approach. Gives the relationship a natural 20 minute livespan, and then I can drop my old guy line at the end: "Nice to meet you. Happy trails!".

Of course, nobody is pushing over here.

Love talking to strangers if they're into it. I was seated beside a young 20 something a few months ago. He was a physicist with a small start up micro nuclear fusion energy company where the only byproduct is H2O. He said its for powering individual plants and high energy use things like data centers to keep them from straining the grid. Thing fits in 20 by 50 warehouse for. Most interesting convo I've ever had on plane.

What a cool connection!

I don't particularly like people, why would I want to chat. That's why I wear headphones.

I was on a flight from LA and got upgraded to business class. Some guy sat next to me - wearing a hoodie kind of drawn down. We had a very basic bit of chit-chat and he settled in. He got up to use the restroom and the woman behind me kicked my chair and demanded 'Change seats with me.' I had all my stuff out and said - no thanks. She kicked my chair again and demanded louder 'Change seats with me.' I again declined. She got very frustrated 'That's Jay Mohr'. I again declined to change seats. She got very frustrated and whined 'But you're wasting him...'. He returned to the row and enjoyed a quiet flight.

I rescind my opinion for flights to LA

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I have no idea who that is but bravo for saving him from the woman behind you.

Gonna guess you're the person who tries to talk to someone even after they very deliberately put earphones on.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

That means talk louder right?

by Anonymous 5 days ago

God. I hope I don't sit next to you :) I want to listen to music, watch videos or sleep. Not talk. To anybody.

by Anonymous 5 days ago

Sometimes i do and sometimes i don't. I particular don't like it if i'm sat next to some conspiracy nut or a bigot, for example, but if i have a similar type of morality as my neighbour then i usually really enjoy the vibe of the conversation. Chatting with and showing appreciation for your fellow humans, be it strangers or not, is one of the most rewarding things you can do these days.

The one time I started to talk to someone, she went on about magnet therapy and trying to sell me some classes. I hope I never sit next to u

by Anonymous 5 days ago

I know at least a little bit about magnets.
