+54 We Need More Anti-War movies, amirite?

by Spencerblanche 10 hours ago

Funny thing is, a lot of anti-war movies incite people to join the military(e.g. Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket)

Johnny Got His Gun, The Deer Hunter, Coming Home, and Paths of Glory are pretty anti war

Breaker Morant

Good one!

I'd enlist if it meant I didn't have to watch The Deer Hunter ever again. That movie is two and a half hours of excruciating boredom wrapped around half an hour of intensity. It's paced like a Tarkovsky film. It got accolades for being an early Vietnam War film, and for it's Oscar-bait casting and !!acting!!, but it's agonizing and not in a good way.

so many pieces of media have this as a central theme

All Quiet On The Westeren front does it better for one reason. The protagonist, the 'hero' of the story, the one you have to relate to dies just seconds before the war is considered over. No noble sacrifice just a worthless needless death because a few guys behind the desk wanted some poetry with the timing. This is the best way to show people that war is hell and pointless. All other war movies wether intentional or not. Glorify it by having the main guy survive it all and be a badass hero who is respected by the end. So many war movies like this INCREASE the military sign ups not decrease and this is exactly why. The idea you'll the the main character who survives it all. All quiet on the western front says hell to all that.

Deer Hunter did a good job, Full metal Jacket and Apocalypse now also showed the lack of humanity

by Sauerkaylin 8 hours ago

If I'm not mistaken, the same thing happens in the book. Johnny got his gun would be an interesting one to do as well.

you would be correct

We need more people that dont base their realities and opinions on entertainment media. Regardless of the message

by phowe 7 hours ago

We need media literacy for that... and yeah, that's not happening any time soon. At least not in the US

by annalise05 7 hours ago

This, but as long as it generates money the rich will keep pushing for poor media literacy.

most movies aiming to be anti-war end up being accidentally pro-war

Not thin red line

do you really think anti war movies will reduce the amount of wars there are 😭😭

by Sad_Following_6020 6 hours ago

Possibly. Movies are art and a form of expression like any other artform. If just one person becomes disillusioned with the glorificaion of war that a win in my book.

It has an impact on culture so yes in a way,

by Spencerblanche 5 hours ago

Pretty sure most war movies have anti-war messages

by Anonymous 5 hours ago

Every war movie is anti war

by Infamous_Can_6713 5 hours ago

Steven Spielberg is that you?

by Longjumping-Fan 5 hours ago

I couldn't remember where I got the quote from, is it from Spielberg?

by Infamous_Can_6713 4 hours ago

I've also heard it argued that the opposite is true. War is exciting and people want to be excited.

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

Many such movies already exist including Apocalypse Now and Starship Troopers

by Anonymous 4 hours ago

This shouldn't be an unpopular opinion.

See: every Vietnam War film in the 70s

American anti-war propoganda disguised as entertainment. Full Metal Jacket, Apocolypse Now, and Born on the Fourth of July come to immediate mind.

by PuzzledSwim 3 hours ago

Written in 1929. Made into an Oscar-winning film in 1930. Industrial slaughter of mankind re-commenced about 6 years later. Not entirely sure we need that now.

by nova33 2 hours ago

we have enough of them. its just that they arent interesting enough to be seen.

by TypicalUpstairs7880 2 hours ago

Stanley Kubrick would like a word

by Anonymous 2 hours ago

I was thinking of Paths of Glory

by Anonymous 1 hour ago

Or, people miss the anti war message, because the people that really need to see such a message are usually media illiterate, or just see what they want too.

by reillyjast 1 hour ago

You mean like 90% of all war movies. Sorry that even including an American flag in a move might trigger you too much to realize the messages trying to get across.

by Illustrious-Media610 1 hour ago

Most war films attempt to be anti-war, but the majority aren't. The glorify it whether they intend to or not, with noble sacrifices, brothers in arms and heroes running into hell yet winning all the same.

by Minatremblay 1 hour ago

Exactly like people think saving private Ryan is anti war when it is not at all. jarhead is much more anti war than it

by No_Refrigerator8063 1 hour ago

Exactly, you simply don't understand these movies. Most war movies have an overall anti-war message. Do you not think that soldiers make sacrifices in war for their fellow soldier? Most war movies multiple main cast members die and the others have mental breakdowns.
