I've read that this is actually largely a myth. They do synch up, but also go out of synch. This is true for any set of periodic things really. Like can be seen here Maybe still magic, depending on your view of math. But not strictly biological. (Note, I am not a woman. Apologies if this is mansplaining. I just find it interesting.)
