I thought Tranny was short for Transvestite, people who dress up in the opposite clothing and Transgendered people were people who switched sexes or identified with the opposite sex. Oh, highschool health class. What a wellspring of knowledge you are.

That is what I thought as well, looks like the slang doesn't have a definite definition. Which kind of sucks too, since a lot of the time it has a sexual meaning to it and not every single trans person likes that.

As an actual Transgendered person, Most people in the community feel that Trannie generally refers to someone dressing up as the opposite sex and performing as a job or hobby. Trans Gendered is a medical condition listed as Gender Identity Disorder or GID. So most people with the condition feel there is a difference and consider being called a Trannie some what offensive. I don't really mind but I'm just clearing up the issue a little bit.

Yes and no. You guys are right in that "tranny" is usually slang for a transvestite or cross-dresser, which is way different from a transgender/transsexual. However, in the past couple years, trans people have started using the word "tranny" to refer to themselves. I sure as hell do. The fact that people used it as an insult to us, it takes away their verbal weapon. Similar to what queers have also done to words like "faggot" and "dyke".
