Snape needed to die. That was the only way that we could feel bad for him and he could be a good guy. (Sorry if I spoiled more of it for people.)

In my mind, he didn't really die, he made some fancy potion that made it seem like he died (like in Romeo and Juliet), and he then later woke up and is living peacefully somewhere in England. :) I cry every time I read that part.
