+90 I don't care what rednecks say, and I'm not really for gun control either, but it's not ok to call it self defense if your using a sniper rifle, and you really shouldn't go deer hunting with a .50 cal either. A sniper rifle is for one thing, and one thing only, amirite?

I agree with the first point, but there's no hunting where I live, so what's the difference between a .50 and any other long range weapon?

Target practice. Just because a person buys a sniper rifle it doesn't mean they intend on shooting someone or using it for self-defense (because in most cases it would be impractical to use one for that reason). I agree that self-defense is a bad argument but there's a certain thrill about shooting powerful weapons and that is the main reason they're purchased.

Almost any rifle can be used as a sniper rifle with the right attachments.

Most sniper rifles are actually the exact same rifles as hunting rifles. Most of the sniper rifles that the US military uses today are based on the Remington model 700, a civilian hunting rifle. As for .50 caliber rifles, not all .50 caliber rifles are sniper rifles. You can get a .50 cal muzzle load rifle that is intended specifically for hunting. No one would use a rifle firing a .50 BMG to hunt deer, that round would tear the entire deer apart.

i don't know about gun control enough to have a stance on it. i see circumstances where gun control doesn't really make sense, because that would create a bigger black market...and i am unsure of whether it would be effective in prevention of events such as Columbine, Virginia Tech, and the Batman shooting. But then again, I don't know alot about the issue.
