they're equal. no arguments

IMO, a song doesn't need lyrics to be good. But that's just a personal preference.

Exactly. Kurt cobain said that the melody comes first, lyrics are secondary

This reminds me of Music and Lyrics Alex Fletcher: It doesn't have to be perfect. Just spit it out. They're just lyrics. Sophie Fisher: "Just lyrics"? Alex Fletcher: Lyrics are important. They're just not as important as melody. Sophie Fisher: I really don't think you get it. Alex Fletcher: Oh. You look angry. Click your pen. Sophie Fisher: A melody is like seeing someone for the first time. The physical attraction. Sex. Alex Fletcher: I so get that. Sophie Fisher: But then, as you get to know the person, that's the lyrics. Their story. Who they are underneath. It's the combination of the two that makes it magical.

The only lyrics I hate are simple lyrics about simple things. I like to think about the meaning of a song and what it means to me rather than listen to a song that just blatantly comes out with its "message". Johnny Cash is an exception though.

Definitely not. Case in point: Friday, or any Rebacca Black song for that matter. Catchy melody, horrible lyrics.

It is not about lyrics anymore, it's about a hot beat and a catchy hook. I don't care if you gotta rhyme smo, joe, toe, and glow. Now get out there and sell some goddamn records. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqyaOSsmuzE

It's funny how this is downvoted, when people don't like a genre of music like metal or emo or country because of the way it sounds even though it may have meaningful lyrics.

In metal, rock, and classical yes, which is what I listen to. In rap and hipittyhoppity yes. I think melody is WAY more important though. Lyrics really don't matter to me, I find myself singing the guitar solo more than the lyrics themselves.
