+514 If you've read the Harry Potter books, you've wondered at least once why they don't use veritaserum more often, amirite?

I agreed with this, but I'm pretty sure it's because it's hard to make like Snape told Umbridge in the 5th book (when Umbridge wants to use it on Harry when he was caught trying to talk to Sirius by floo powder after he saw the vision of him being tortured by Voldemort). Or it might just take a long time to set, I can't remember.

I read that part today, and Snape actually said that he could make some Veritaserum, but that it would take him a month. Also, I'm thinking about really serious situations, for example when they're questioning death eaters. Lucius Malfoy avoided going to Azkaban, by saying that he was controlled by the Imperius Curse, but if they used veritaserum he wouldn't be able to lie ...

(Extremely Anonymous): Yeah, I really don't know why they don't use it like ALL THE TIME in serious court cases like that (especially with that flimsy of an excuse) because, you're right, they wouldn't be able to lie and then the Second Wizarding War probably wouldn't have happened since all (or most...) of the Death Eaters that really supported him would be in Azakaban and Voldy wouldn't have anybody to come back to!

Ok I love how I always see you've commented on the one's I wanted to comment on haha.

Well, I'm kinda on here like *all the time* haha. And how could I not comment on this one?!?!?! That'd take too much self control haha.

I THINK I remember reading in one of the books that its use is prohibited by the ministry, and Snape threatened that his hand might "slip." I'm pretty sure it's the fourth book when Barty Crouch Jr is stealing from Snape, but he blames Harry because he catches him out of bed.

Read the Potter books 7 times! I mean, the entire series 7 times. Agreed. But yes, Collin. It IS prohibited. Snape suggested that it might happen but he was bluffing. Umbridge is aloud to use it because she IS the ministry.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes it is prohibited, and it could be considered mental torture to force somebody to say something they don't want to

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes it's prohibited, but there are still many situations when they could have used it. In the fourth book they used it to question Barty Crouch Jr, but why didn't the ministry use it, as I said above, in the trials of death eaters 14 years earlier? And why can't people prove that they're not lying by demanding to get a few drops of veritaserum? That way Sirius would never go to Azkaban, Peter Pettigrew would have to hide forever, Hagrid would never be expelled or suspected for opening the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter would be able to PROVE that Voldemort is back by just asking for veritaserum. The list goes on ...

Jk rowling actually says on her website that wizards can resist veritaserum effects if they know its coming (like in an upcoming trial) and the reason it worked on barty crouch Jr because he was in an invulnerable state and didn't see it coming

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh ... I didn't know that. :O

Or the time turner.
