+151 It makes no sense that Captain Planet, a show made for KIDS had an episode about AIDS and even talked about unprotected sex and drugs with needles along with blood transplant, escpecially when they could have just said the transplant in the first place. amirite?

Is there a link to the episode in question? I agree that if they were going to do an AIDS episode, the blood transplant as a central plot would have been more child appropriate, with sex and needle drugs maybe said as a subplot. But, having unprotected sex and using needle drugs are more likely to transfer HIV than blood transplants nowadays, since most hospitals triple-check any blood, so perhaps they were aimed for a more accurate portrayal.

also, remember Captain Planet is from like the 90s so it's not like they had the same amount of precaution as we do today. But they had some sort of check I'm sure, not like 80's bad.

Ah, yeah, that's right. I don't know when all blood had to be tested multiple times; obviously they would have some system in place in the 90's, but not the same as today.

Thank you.

Hmm, sorry. I linked it with my iPod. Just Google "Captain Planet Aids episode" and it'll be one of the first ones.

No problem. I'm only four minutes in, but so far it doesn't look too bad. The doctor did explain that HIV isn't the same thing as AIDS, and that the guy probably did get it from a blood transfusion. And the bad guys aren't trying to spread AIDS, they're trying to spread ignorance about AIDS, which is the /real/ bad thing IRL.

dude I love how everyone is wearing big nikes and those high up shorts.

Hahaha. Oh god it's like some horrible 90's flashback.

There was also one about Protestant and Catholic violence in Ireland or something like that.

I remember that one! And, there once was an episode of Alvin and the Chipmunks, where the chipmunks brought down the Berlin Wall.

I honestly don't see anything wrong with it. I'd rather the kids learn aobut it when they're young, in a way we can monitor than have them go around not knowing anything at all.

1) This post is awkwardly worded 2) I watched the episode, and there's nothing wrong with it. It just teaches kids to be accepting and get the facts about something instead of a skewed opinion. OP makes it sound like HIV/AIDS is a terrible thing that kids need to be sheltered from as much as possible. :/
