People who don't particularly care for an activity often exaggerate the amount of time and interest the people who do like the activity put into it.

Yes. Fantasy football players only really pay attention to their teams on Sundays (game day), Thursdays (free agency day), and Saturday (lineup changes). And I'd say the only time they are remotely obsessive is on game day.

Perhaps it's just an error in judgement caused by the time of obsession (for lack of a better word) intersecting the time that a certain person is with a friend, such as Sturminator's case.

Quite possible. I was speaking more generally, though. When someone isn't interested in a hobby, they ask the hobbyist how and why they're so obsessed with the hobby. I hear it all the time with sports and reading, in particular.
