+394 We use tax payer money to help poor in other countries, but as soon as someone suggests using our american money for health care for everyone, people get all outraged, amirite?

I'm outraged with both. If people want to give money to lesser countries, go for it! It's nice. I would give money. The government shouldn't give our money away. Universal health care would be nice. It seems fair, right? Everyone has it! But it's not fair for people who actually afford it and have certain benefits that might be taken away. The government, to be honest, can't run anything right. Medicare and Medicaid are failing miserably, just like Social Security. I just don't want my money going to someone who won't even try to get a job or anything. I would love to help out someone who is actually TRYING to get a job, as long as it's my choice and someone isn't taking my money and telling me I HAVE to have something a certain way.

I believe that you could have your own healthcare with universal health care, it would just provide healthcare for the people who dont have it

But people are STILL paying for that. Tax payers are still paying for people who won't get jobs, or just aren't even trying.

Whenever the government supplies a public good, such as healthcare, it crowds out private investment and is unfair competition for private companies. If the government provides healthcare, eventually there will be no substitutes because no company will be able to compete.

*sigh* yet more political rhetoric from people who obviously have no idea what they're talking about. The way it stands now, you MUST meet a minimum requirement for applying and looking for jobs to continue to receive unemployment benefits. I'm sure there are some people who work the system, but THE GOVERNMENT CAN'T CONTROL THAT. They have rules and regulations in place to make sure benefits are going to people who are trying to help themselves, and if you get caught defrauding the system, you lose benefits, may have to pay back any you weren't entitled to, and even end up in jail. For the record, I have never received unemployment; I just prefer to be informed about the issues rather than regurgitating parts of what I hear others say in an attempt to sound like I know something I don't.

Oh, I got derailed by the ignorance in the comments- I think the original post is brilliant, and I'm frankly suprised it's anon. That is all.

It's not that I don't like the idea of universal health care... I just don't think that with this new health reform we'll ever be able to pay off our country's debt which will just drive us further into a recession... I have mixed views about it I guess...

No the health care thing is gonna be rough. I'm not disputing that. I just get tired of people saying "I'm tired of my taxes paying for people to sit home and do nothing" or some such thing. I'm not saying there aren't people who abuse the system... people will take advantage of anything, given opportunity. But it's not like the gov is just throwing money at people with no criteria or hoops to jump through. It's actually quite a pain in the ass. You usually can't get it if you are fired from a job for cause, or if you weren't there for at least 6 months. You can also only get it for so long; Obama's been extending it because the jobs simply aren't there. Things are scary in the real world, amirite kiddies... enjoy high school while it lasts. (I am not assuming you're in high school necessarily, btw op; I'm just speaking in general.)
