+106 People shouldn't record Broadway shows and then post them on youtube, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well, clips are okay. Like part of a scene or something. Just to help people get excited and want to see more.

Actually that isn't even okay. Unless they were recorded BY the show for public relations. Anything else is not legal. So if you're just watching the show then you shouldn't record it. If you're WITH the show and you're doing it for ads then that's okay. Plus, when an actor onstage sees that little red light flashing in the audience, it might thorw them off guard and they'll think "Oh crap, this is going on youtube I better not mess up" and it just ruins it for them.

Yeah, and I agree. But I thought you meant at all, not even for advertisements and whatnot. Haha, silly me...

Haha sorry for going all smarty pants on you. I just read "Theater Geek" and it's about the theater camp StageDoor Manor and there was this whole paragraph about recording during a live show. Btw, it's an amazing book. :D

Sounds cool, I'm going to have to read it. It might help me get even more pumped up for being in community theater this year! XD

It sounds like a pretty intense book. They put on 13 full scale productions ever 3 weeks. No joke. You have like 8 hour rehearsals everyday. But I love that kinda thing. And Lea Michele went there. It's really interesting to see the campers in-sight too!

Nifty!

A lot of people are never going to get the chance to see a Broadway Musical in person, so that's the only way they can. Yeah, it's illegal, but so are a lot of things that people do.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yes, but usually after a show has ended for good, the company releases an actual recording of the play, a legal version that people can buy, or even watch on TV.

Why the fuck not?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It's a nuisance to the actors and it's common theatre courtesy not to film, especially since before the beginning of each show they make an announcement about flash photography and recording.

It's illegal in the same way as downloading music and not paying for it. Sure, it's illegal, but minimally, and should be taken with the same seriousness as that (admittedly, people shouldn't download music for free).

What about broadway shows that aren't on broadway any more, like cats?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If no one's making money off it, then you're free to distribute any part of it for free.

omg Cats.
