Well really Yoda uses the Japanese sentence structures when talking, so it's possible they were basing him off a Japanese person. At least that's what my Japanese teacher told me. If I'm wrong on that don't quote me!! (;

yoda's lines aren't actually grammatically incorrect, they're just not what english-speakers are used to because we don't normally talk like that. but he does technically use proper english grammar.
