I avoid this by looking behind/to the side to check and make sure that they don't have their hand up too. Then everyone's staring at me like "wow, you're an idiot. Just answer the *expletive* question!" and then I'm like "how was I supposed to know that they didn't have their hand up!?" So yeah. There is absolutely no way to avoid awkwardness in that situation.
