After waking up from a bad dream, you dont actually sit up in bed panting. Amirite?

When I was little I actually did. When I'd wake up, my heart would literally feel like it was jumping out of my chest and I would be sitting straight up in bed all sweaty and pant-y.

I freeze completely. I don't move for, like, 20 minutes out of sheer terror.

I just lie really still in bed, and slowly move once I'm completely sure I'm not dreaming anymore. And keep the idea of dreaming in mind, so if anything weird happens, it becomes a lucid dream, and i can control everything.

I lay there still and silent for like, 10 minutes with my eyes shut tight and the blankets over my head. Then I just try to dream something that won't scare me into a catatonic state again.

I sort of just wake up and then roll over and go back to sleep a few minutes after.

I had a dream where I practically died and I woke up really fast and sat up and cried. Yep.

I actually shot out of bed and turned the light before I was fully awake once.

I had the "falling over the edge of a cliff" dream and I woke up unable to breathe and started sobbing.

I have a lot of nightmares and rarely, if ever, do I sit up and pant; usually I lie down and pant or sit up and cry or grab my sister from the top bunk and scream at her to wake up because the monsters are coming to get me.
