+159 'Guys' became a plural for people, male or female. Yet no one says to a group of people 'girls', amirite?

exactly! You can call a group of girls 'guys' but you'd never call a group of both genders 'girls'.

I think it just sort of came to be that way simply because the English language is based off of so many Latin languages that clearly define feminine and masculine words. For example, in French, a group of only boys would be ils, and a group of only girls is elles, but a group of both genders would be ils. It's just the results of patriarchy really.
