When someone calls you 'mate', they're usually not your mate. amirite?

I use "mate" both as a substitute for "friend", but I also call anyone it, if that makes sense.
Like, I'd say "I went to the city with some mates today" or "Me and my mate Sam are watching a movie", but if I went to the shops, I'd call the cashier "mate".
