Why would they purposely do something to plague their console?

because dude, only shitty xboxs get the red ring anyways. So then since people are scared of getting an arcade for fear of getting the red ring, they buy an elite. A much more expensive, but better version. Elites don't get the red ring. EVER. It's a business strategy.

Well thats the first I've heard of an elite getting the red ring. I've had mine for years and no problems whatsoever.

oh well I have had a regular xbox for a while gotten the red ring several times now I'm gunna buy the new black one and my friend bought an elite and got the red ring twice

Arcade for 3 years. Moderate use and no red rings. I might just be lucky though.

Elite or arcade, if both are built the same year both are able to run into the same problems.

i don't think so, it's just that every piece of hardware and software ever created has had its flaws. microsoft may have been able to stop some of the reoccuring flaws but have instead been stumped by one that only happens once in a while. not trying to start a war here but it's similiar to the YLOD of ps3.
