+580 Probably the hardest decision a kid would have to make is choosing which parent to live with through divorce, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

My choice was pretty simple. Mostly because my dad was a terrible father.

I'm sorry to hear that.

Same with me... :/

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm really sorry :(

Same here, honestly I was just happy he was out of my house.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah same here, I am glad to see my mom happy again. She didn't deserve to be treated like that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's good, I'm glad things worked out for both of you.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Thanks :)

Bleh, same here. :( My dad is still a jerk to my mom, I lived with him for half the days last year, but I'm so glad that's over.

I'm not familiar with divorce, does the kid actually get to choose? I've always been under the impression the court appoints which parent is the main caretaker.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I believe it depends, but I'm not sure...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Sometimes the days are split evenly, if the parents can agree in court, or one parent gets the kid most of the time, etc...but (though the age depends in different states) if the kid is old enough to decide, and does not agree with the arragements, they can get it changed. That's what I did.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I thought the court decided which parent was more suitable.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I never got the choice, my mom decided for me. >.<

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I thought you had to be 16 to pick? That was the case for me at least, so I flip flopped parents.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think it depends on the state, in Arizona you just have to be over 12

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Even though my parents are divorced I feel lucky that my parents still live in the same city. I can go back and forth between the two parents every week and I don't have to worry about not knowing one of them that well. I'm especially glad because I was 2 at the time and if one moved away I would have never known them.

I'm sure this is different in every state, but where I'm from it's a maturity factor, and if the court determines that both parents are fit parents, they let the child chose if the child is roughly around 12. But usually if it's a matter for full custody, there's usually a reason behind it, and one parent is clearly better than another.

Well since my mom got the apartment i had to stay with her, but i went to my dad every weekend for about 4-5 years until a certain something happened in my country and he moved to Norway which i visit now every summer, ...meaning im there right now.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

if my parents ever divorce i know i would go with my dad because my mom and me don't get along very well

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i was 2, i didn't get to choose

What's worse is when a parent fights you on your decision, says you aren't old enough to choose (when the law says you are!).

Many states will allow the court to appoint you (the child) a lawyer to represent your, if you ask the judge for one. Even in states that don't specifically have that in the law, the judge has the authority to assign you a lawyer.
