-205 When you found out that Dumbledore was gay, you can't help but rethink that his closeness with Harry was kinda creepy, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Not at all. He's not a freaking pedophile, and you're a moron.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I came here to say that.

I'm guessing that most people are NWing this post because they either think it's somewhat discriminatory towards gays or that the awesome and incredible Dumbledore could never be a pedophile, so it's a non-issue. First of all, I don't think this post is discriminatory towards gays at all. If a straight male teacher took a special interest in a female student, going with her on special trips, it would be considered creepy. If it was in the American educational system, it's very possible that teacher would be fired if a parent complained. As for Dumbledore not being a pedophile... no, he wasn't a pedophile. But that doesn't make the situation less creepy. Would the above example be creepy even if the teacher wasn't a pedophile? Fuck yes, it would.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I disagreed because it didn't creep me out.

@Shaanrora - But Dumbledore's connection to Harry wasn't entirely rational, as in your scenario. He developed an intense emotional connection with Harry.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

He had an emotional connection with Harry because he knew Harry's parents. He acted as a father figure to Harry, there's nothing creepy about that.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

So what if the relationship started based on rationale? A situation doesn't have to start creepy to become creepy. And just because the book shows Harry only visiting Dumbledore a few times each year doesn't mean that's the only times he visited him. Obviously, it's fiction, so it's impossible to do anything more than make assumptions, but I'd assume that if they actually existed, Harry would visit Dumbledore more often than described in the book.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

You pointed out that one of the reasons their relationship isn't rational is because he had a emotional connection with Harry, I just wanted to counter that point by saying why he had the connection with Harry. Just out of curiosity, do you find Hermione and Hagrid's relationship creepy?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@lien- No, I don't find Hermione and Hagrid's relationship creepy. As far as I know, she never visited him alone (like Harry does with Dumbledore) and in my opinion the same level of affection wasn't there. Also, the only known love Hagrid has (once again, this is AFAIK -- I could be wrong) is for other giants, which would lead me to believe he is only attracted to giants.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@shaanorora - Dumbledore often called Harry into his office, which is essentially the same thing as visiting him. And I don't think their relationship was insanely creepy or anything, but knowing that he was possibly physically attracted to Harry is somewhat strange.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Don't quote me on this but I recall her visiting Hagrid alone when Harry and Ron were mad at her. And like you said just because it's barely in the book doesn't mean it doesn't happen more often. I feel like Hermione and Hagrid had a more personal relationship than Harry and Dumbledore because Hagrid is a friend to Hermione, Dumbledore was more of a mentor to Harry. The only known love of Dumbledore is (Grindelwald) a grown man, which leads me to believe he is not attracted to little boys.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@lien - Harry isn't a little boy. By the time Dumbledore dies, he's 16 or 17 or so. And I would imagine that some teenagers of that age are attractive to some adults. You're not a pedophile if you're attracted to someone that's underage, you're only a pedophile if you act on that attraction. So it's quite possible that Dumbledore was attracted to Harry while not being a pedophile.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Definition of pedophile (from dictionary.com): "an adult who is sexually attracted to young children." I wouldn't call Harry a young child.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I hope you don't feel like shaanarora and I are ganging up on you but I agree with you, even if Dumbledore was attracted to Harry he would not be a pedophile. What I still don't get is what exactly about their relationship do you find creepy?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@shaanarora - Once again, a situation doesn't have to start creepy to become creepy. Also, they became more and more close as the years went on.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@lien - You wouldn't find it slightly creepy if you found out that the adult you had an emotional connection with had the potential to be physically attracted to you?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Define emotional connection.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Whatever Harry had with Dumbledore.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Honestly, no I wouldn't if I was in the situation Harry is (Dumbledore knowing his parents and having to teach him stuff so he can save the world). I don't think either of us will change our minds so we'll just agree to disagree.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Can we please acknowledge the fact that Harry was 'The Chosen One' and had the power to save the wizarding world and Dumbledore was pretty much the only person who knew that and the full extent of the situation.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Wait, Dumbledore was gay???

by Anonymous 11 years ago

It's been a while since I read the books, but I remember that I found Dumbledore to be distant, in some ways. He was more like a mentor and a grandfather. I think he was trying not to get emotionally attached, knowing that Harry was going to have to sacrifice himself to get rid of Voldemort. And he learned lessons about desire the hard way, with Grindelwald; he would guard against anything untoward he felt for Harry.

When you found out that a mother likes men, you couldn't help but find her relationship with her son kind of creepy, amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Because gay = pedophile?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

@yeahiam, you literally have no argument.
