It's stupid when you get grounded for something that was a complete accident, amirite?

very stupid indeed. The point of punishment is to teach them a lesson. If its an accident, its not like your teaching them a lesson to not make mistakes, your teaching them that theyre being punished becase your mad.

Depends on the accident and/or the punishment. When I was younger (16ish), I was constantly forgetting my keys. It was accidental EVERY single time - I honestly forgot them. Still, disciplinary action would have taught me to pay more attention to where my things are, ergo, teaching me responsibility.

I'm doubtful. I got my phone, computer, and car taken away for two weeks because I forgot my keys three time in a row. I still forget. Bad memory is bad memory. I'm supposed to wear my ID around my neck at school, and it doesn't matter how many times I go to Saturday school, I don't remember. You can't help having a bad memory. Like my nephew, his foster mom punishes him for wetting the bed. He can't help it.

Wetting the bed is a differently entire scenario. That's done in your unsconscious sleep. It's terrible he's being punished for that.
But with regards to a bad memory, there ARE things to counteract it. Write notes to yourself. Leave keys in the same spot, etc. Point is, if you continually forget your work keys and therefore, can't get it (or out), your boss WILL get pissed.

Writing a note is unconscious too. Writing yourself a note will make you see the note that tells you to get your keys, so you'll get your keys, but you still forgot in the first place. And I didn't know that was the point.

Dammit. I meant bad memory is unconscious too.

OK, but the post doesn't say anything about what you could have done to prevent what you got in trouble for. Writing yourself a note or whatever doesn't change the fact that you forgot in the first place, and the post is about punishment, so all that is irrelevant. And no, the point is not if you forget your keys your boss will be pissed.

The point is that discipline can teach you to be more responsible. So, you forget your keys a few times in a row... You get punished in one way or another.
Since you DON'T like the punishment and don't want it to happen again, you will now (hopefully) take more care not to forget your keys than you did before.
You'll get up 10 minutes earlier so you're not in a rush. You'll leave them in the same spot every time. You leave reminder notes for yourself.
Eventually, your habits will change from forgetting your keys to remembering them.
And this is important because in the real world, if a boss hands you the keys for something, they expect you to be responsible with them. Or else they will be pissed. So yes, there are real life consequences to forgetting your keys.

Point is, it's the waking up earlier and writing yourself notes that changes your action, not the discipline.
by Anonymous12 years ago
Yes, but the discipline encourages you to take immediate action. To not "forget" to remind yourself as well. ;)

No, forgetting my keys three times in a row encourages me to take immediate action. Being grounded for a few weeks from my car makes me not be able to use the "writing myself a note" tencnique for a few weeks.
