-80 Visiting a Baptist church can be the scariest thing imaginable. Amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm sorry, posts like these really show the ignorance of people. It's a church. The worst that'll happen is you'd have to say that you're not interested and they'd leave you alone.

"the scariest thing imaginable" is an exaggeration, but being surrounded by people who passionately disagree with you to the point of considering you to be evil can be very intimidating. If you are pro-choice, an atheist and/or homosexual then some baptist churches would be filled with such people.

Well, Southern Baptist churches agree that the Bible is infallible, strive to uphold the moralistic aspects of it, and believe in every word. We don't believe most people are "evil," just misguided. We disagree with homosexuality, abortion, and evolution, because the Bible instructs otherwise. And, we aren't mindlessly obeying a book, we are taking into consideration those points when we make our decision. We hate the sin, not the sinner.

You think it's not true, what about Westboro Baptist church, they protest at funerals.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh no. Oh goodness no. Please don't use the Westboro Baptist Church to represent all Christians. They aren't real Christians. God doesn't hate "fags", he hates the sin of homosexuality, but not the homosexual.

This is so ignorant. I've been going to a baptist church my entire life and we accept everyone with open arms. We have gay members and I am pro choice. To assume all baptists are like the westboro baptist church is dumb. Let me tell you I don't think those people that act like that are true Christians. True Christians follow gods word and all of his word. Like not judging and loving your neighbor.

I used to go to a Baptist Church with my older sister, who was in high school. She was part of the Drama Club and was really close friends with a lot of gay guys. Sometimes, in order to practice for a play, she would have to miss a day or two of church. The priest or preacher or whatever got mad at her and said she was going to hell because she was choosing her gay friends over the church (which was not true), and one of my sister's best friends turned her OTHER best friend against her because she felt that my sister was choosing her "gay" firends and the drama club over her and the church. This post may not be ignorant. Maybe this post is just something that person had experienced personally. It doesn't mean all Baptist Churches are horrible, but it does leave something to be desired :

While I am an atheist, I don't agree with your excuse for her about it being her personal experience. There could be someone who said they had a bad personal experience with a gay person or a black person or something, but most would not accept that as an excuse for his or her homophobia or racism.

Umh. If I get what your saying, then I wasn't using that as a way to say "ALL BAPTIST CHURCHES SUCK AND ARE FILLED WITH HORRIBLE PEOPLE!" and that's not what the POST is saying either. It is saying that it CAN be scary. Just like visiting any place where people have such strong beliefs can be scary and unnerving. However, I have never HAD a negative experience like that with a catholic or lutheran or whatever church. This post doesnt say all Baptists are mean people, it's just saying it can be an unnerving experience. which is what I was saying..

C'mon, you can't just go around thinking that Baptists are scary. I've been going to a baptist church for the past 3 years and I have never encountered anything scary about it. I have stayed for three years because I am very comfortable with the church.

i didnt say they ALL were... i said they CAN be. OMG i was just agreeing with the post..

A lot of Baptist churches are awesomely fun. We (well not those like Westboro) are really accepting; I have a lot of gay friends and think they are awesome. God doesn't hate his children he only hates the sin that seperates us from him. But, anyways once you get to know everyone it's hilarious. For example, our youth group went camping and the guys decided to wake up the girls by launching fireworks at 5 a.m. and we got them back by putting Kool-Aid in there showers, which, temporarily dyed their hair blue. :D

To be fair, using the Westboro Baptist church is also a bad example because it is made up almost completely of Fred Phelps's crazy, lunatic family.

i've been going to baptist church all my life and it's not scary at all, the people at my church are super friendly and a god loving person wouldnt be afraid at any place of worship.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I am insulted. We believe in the bible and accept everyone with open arms. Christians know homosexuality and abortion is wrong, so why would you go to church, if you believe in that stuff? God Bless!

Try going to a pentecostal church.

Church: not scary. Fred Phelps: very scary. In a facepalm kind fo way.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

To me, they are scary because they had such a strong belief based on a book, and I cannot relate. So I guess it would be better to say it's an "out of my comfort zone" expierience that I do not handle well. So, to avoid it, I just don't go to church =) I think, therefore I am Athiest. But if you believe in God, more power to you.
