That's why I put "better" in quotes. If beauty is defined by lack of flaws, then today's films are in fact better, but if it isn't and it happens to be defined by something deeper, something that we can't see, then our films are just as good as they have been or will ever be.

Before then, they would've just spent another hour in the make-up room, or used a clever camera angle, or padded out/tucked in clothing in all the right places. There have always been tricks to make people look unrealistically pretty for the cameras.
