+773 A lot of the nursery rhymes are depressing. Jack and Jill fell down the hill, Humpty Dumty cracked, everyone in Ring Around the Rosey dies, in hush a bye baby the baby fell out of the tree, London Bridges fall down, and more that I can't think of at the moment, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Humpty Dumpty didnt crack; he broke into peices. Which is really gory, considering they never said he was an egg.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I knew there was a reason why that nursery rhymes is one of my favorites! x]

by Anonymous 13 years ago

crack, broke into pieces same thing just different.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Plus they never said Jack and Jill were people, did they? Nope. People say Humpty Dumpty is an egg because thats how the book its illustrated.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Why is the book illustrated like that, hmm?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Because that's just how they decided to make him. An egg.

“There was an old woman who lived in a shoe. She had so many children, she didn’t know what to do. She gave them some broth,Without any bread, Whipped them all soundly, and sent them to bed.” “Goosey goosey gander where shall I wander, Upstairs, downstairs and in my lady’s chamber There I met an old man who wouldn’t say his prayers, I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs.” “Peter Peter pumpkin eater, Had a wife and couldn’t keep her! He put her in a pumpkin shell, And there he kept her very well!” “Ladybug ladybug fly away home, Your house in on fire and your children are gone, All except one and that’s little Ann, For she crept under the frying pan.”

by Anonymous 13 years ago

its raining its pouring the old man is snoring he went to bed and bumped his head and couldn't get up in the morning. I heard this with my friend and freaked out say "OMG He's dead!!!"

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Hush a bye baby? No. ROCK a bye baby.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I didn't know what it was called so I looked it up. According to Google it is hush a bye baby. Anyway why the hell does it mater?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

All these nursery rhymes are about gravity.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

the old woman who swallowed a fly, dies in the end

by Anonymous 13 years ago

this would have been a great post, if it weren't for the 'and more that i can't think of at the moment'...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Sorry it bothers you so much? Would have it been better if I had gone on and on about all the damn nursery rhymes?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Not all all. Just saying, if you'd left it at 'London Bridges fall down' , it would've sounded better.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ring around the Rosie was about the Black Plague o.o

by Anonymous 13 years ago

All nursing rhymes are written about terrible events in history.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What about this one? I mean, it's about a 19th-century serial killer! Mary Ann Cotton, She's dead and she's rotten She lies in her bed, With her eyes wide open Sing, sing, oh, what can I sing, Mary Ann Cotton is tied up with string Where, where? Up in the air Sellin' black puddens a penny a pair.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It was a bad idea reading these at 2:21am. Now I'm a little frightened.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Hahaha! x]

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Rock a bye baby Is actually about monarchy... And yes, ring around the Rosie is about the black plague. .. I'm not sure bout the other ones tho :P

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I didn't get that Ring Around the Rosie was about death when I was a kid - I just thought "fall down" meant "fall down." It may be about the plague, but I think it's the most appropriate for kids out of all of them because little kids just won't get it!

In the old version of cinderella, the ugly stepsisters cut off their toes to fit into the glass slipper.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Orignal fairy tales are depressing too. The little mermaid dies, Sleeping Beauty's mother-in-law is a ogress who tries to kill her children, and the wolf eats Little Red Riding Hood.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Ring around the rosey: Victims of the plague often had a swollen red ring around their eye Pocket full of posey: Victims would often carry flowers in the pocket to cover up the smell of death, some thought it would ward off the disease Ashes, ashes: They would take the bodies of the dead and those suffering from the disease and throw them in pits to burn the bodies, slowing down the spread of disease We all fall down: Death The black plague killed up to 60% percent of Europe's population.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Okay people I've read it was about the Black Plague like 10 times. I got it the first time thank you; it was my fifth grade teacher who told me alright people make mistakes.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Anyway the still DID die. I just didn't put the part about the black plague.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's NOT about the black plague, get your facts straight! According to snopes the rhyme wasn't even written down until 500 YEARS after the black plague. Read the article people.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It may have been written 500 years after the black plague but it is about the plague

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Most nursery ryhmes seem to have been created to help children cope with bad times, death and other suffering. I am not saying this as fact, just saying thats what it seems like.

Hushabye baby or rockabye baby is about when mothers use to use wicker baskets or fabric and tie or hang it from a tree branch. They would place the baby inside and swing it or let the wind blow to rock it. If the branch or bough were to break the craddle and baby would fall.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

A baby falling out of a tree sounds pretty sad to me...
