+20 How come if something is handmade, it's more expensive and supposedly higher quality? I would rather trust a machine, because they're precise and don't make mistakes, amirite?

It doesn't have love though♥ (;

It's more expensive because it takes more time to make one of them and because they //are// higher quality because usually the person making the item uses better materials. Machines //do// makes mistakes, and although people do as well, if it's being handcrafted the person can look over every bit of detail on the product for errors.

Handmade items are usually one-of-a-kind because a human can't do something exactly the same twice, while machines can churn out dozens of exact copies.

Handmade means each one was checked by a human as it was being made. Machines can make mistakes and because they make large quantities, some mistakes get sent to the consumer.

Machines are precise, but that leads to defects if the product wasn't perfectly positioned during the manufacturing process. As a knife collector, there are several reasons that it's worth it to purchase a hand-made, custom knife. Compared to factory-produced knives, a knife made by hand generally features different materials. The handle is often made of a better material, and the steel alloys are often a higher grade. The tempering of the steel is often better and more consistent if done by hand. Also, humans can compensate for changes, while machines cannot. If the blade blank was off center during the manufacturing, the grinds will be off center and asymmetric. Humans can grind a completely symmetric edge because they can see the blank and manipulate it in real time. It's also harder for machines to put certain grinds on a blade, such as a convex grind. Not regarding actual quality, it means more to people to have something that time and effort was put in to, instead of just being cranked out by a machine.
