+704 Someone can own a piano, but they first have to tune it and learn how to play it before becoming a pianist, right? If this is so, why is it that so many people think that having a voice automatically makes them a singer, amirite?

OMFG YES. I sing in a band, have a proffesional vocals coach, and sing for public gigs (like at bars or the studio). It's annoying when I say "I'm a singer." and people reply, "Oh! Me too! Just at home, though." ...then they're not a singer...

I'm doing Performing Arts next year in college and I'm terrefied, I can't sing that well but I'm hoping I'll be taught to improve it, I really wanna work in the west end.

I agree! Same with teenage girls with cameras. They then either make their pictures black & white or turn the contrast all the way up and then add them to thei r "photography album" on facebook.

Now that's not necessarily true. One of my good friends has a photography album, and her work is just as good as some of the stuff I've seen on DeviantArt. The only other person I know who has an album like that is a girl who took photography as an elective. Her pictures are also pretty good. But what I do find annoying is those girls who use Picnik to edit their pictures and use text to write all over them and stuff. Picnik doesn't make you a professional, I'm sorry. XD

I've never really understood why professionals or someone that's really good at something get so offended at the idea of amatures... you were one once, too. Everyone starts somewhere.

So the message we're supposed to get here is: go pro or stfu? People can't do things for fun, because somehow that diminishes your achievements? How does that work?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You're kind of missing the point. I'm saying that people who haven't had professional training shouldn't act like they're professionals.

I think what the post is getting at is just because you can carry a tune, that doesn't make you a singer. Singing takes a lot more skill than to be able to sing your favorite song while deriving in the car. The post isn't saying not to sing, just don't say "OMG! I'm a singer too!" when in reality you're just someone who can sing decently.

or that having a camera makes you a photgrapher

well you see, photographers shoot other things besides their reflection in a mirror in trampy clothes and a slutty pose. This is my friends flickr: flickr.com/cassandra-castellucci

Exactly. Just like Artists. People have to realize that when they copy or trace something, they are not artists. People do have to start somewhere, but no one is instantly skilled.

Amen to that.
