+654 When you hear about someone asian you usually assume that they're Chinese or Japanese (basically Oriental) and not from a different part of asia like India. amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's because people from India are Indian.

Asia is a continent. There are a whole slew of countries in Asia.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think it's because, based on a glance it's hard to tell if someone is either Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc. so it's easier to say Asian, whereas it's easier to see that someone is from India specifically.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

True. But that's the point of this post, is it not? :P

by Anonymous 13 years ago

actually, you can't tell the difference between indians, pakistanies, nepalese, sri lankans, etc. either.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes it is, but there are different races on different parts of the continent. We assume "Asian" means Chinese, Japanese, etc. because all the other races in Asia have a different name: Indian, Middle Eastern. There's no better name if you know someone is from eastern Asia but you don't know what race specifically. Ideally, you'd say "Eastern Asian" but since there's no "Western Asian" (That's Middle Eastern) it's unnecessary.

Ya but technically theyre asian too

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Nobody considers Indians to be Asian, even if they technically are

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I do, but then again i am indian, which makes me super-biased

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm Indian and this has happened to me loads of times.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's spelled Chinese. This is the second post where it's spelled Chineese. Is this supposed to be a bad joke or?

(California Girl): its people that type fast and type too of the same letter by accident...why does it bother you so much?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What about russians? they are asian too

by Anonymous 13 years ago

... They're European.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Nope. Russia is in Asia. Go check a map.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

lol no, stop voting down that guy he's right. Russia is in Europe. Russia is in Asia as well, it's so big it stretches out across both of the continents. But, i only know this because I am actually from there. since the day i moved to America and started going to American schools no one has ever talked about Russia or the continents other than America, so i don't blame you two for not knowing.

True, true. so many people come up to me and are like 'You're not asian, you're indian, and India isn't in Asia!' And I'm like 'Well what continent are Indians in, then?'

by Anonymous 13 years ago
