Depends on what you mean by "best musicians". Death Metal is still going strong and absolutely chock full of some of the most talented musicians to ever walk the Earth. If you're talking about making music that SOUNDS good, then that's completely subjective and can't be answered.

Most of the world's MUSICIANS are dead, if you think about it. The dead typically outnumber the living when it comes to subcultures. Not the entirety of humanity, though. There are more people alive today than all of those that are dead combined. Isn't that insane?

I will agree with the first part, but I once read somewhere that in all of humanity, there have been somewhere in the realm of 180,000,000,000 alive in total. That's a looot more than are alive today.
